Job Description

DMC University Laboratories (DMCUL) is a regional, integrated laboratory system serving the eight hospitals of Detroit Medical Center. Established in 1993, it comprises Core Laboratories, Specialty Laboratories, rapid response hospital labs, Centralized Stat Lab, Blood Bank Lab, and outreach services including patient centers, courier, and billing. Our service area covers Southeast Michigan with over 1,000 tests, including high-end specialties, and less than 1% sent outside for reference.

Summary

Under supervision and following established guidelines, oversees daily activities of Laboratory Assistants and II to ensure operational efficiency. Responsibilities include training, scheduling, quality checks, workflow monitoring, troubleshooting, and ensuring compliance with OSHA and OIG policies. Facilitates communication between management and staff, manages specimen processing, documentation, and results entry, oversees safety and inventory, and supports process improvements. Acts as a resource for internal and external customers and may perform duties of Laboratory Assistants as needed. Supports organizational values and acts as supervisor in absence.

Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent; Associate's degree preferred.
  • Minimum three years experience in phlebotomy or specimen processing in healthcare; 3 years phlebotomy experience required for Outreach Department.
  • Previous leadership experience required.
  • Customer service experience required; Phlebotomy Certification preferred.
