Job summary

Wabtec Corporation in Germantown is seeking an SMT Team Lead to direct all SMT manufacturing operations for high-quality electronic assemblies. You will lead equipment setup, programming, production support, and quality assurance while ensuring compliance with procedures and 5S standards.

You will coordinate schedules, supervise the team, and drive process improvements, safety, and on-time delivery in a fast-paced production environment.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 3 years of SMT manufacturing experience.
  • Experience operating SMT production equipment (paste printers, P&P, reflow ovens, inspection).
  • Strong understanding of PCB assembly processes and electronic components.
  • Experience with ERP/MRP systems and manufacturing documentation.
  • Ability to read engineering drawings and assembly instructions.
  • Strong troubleshooting, organizational and communication skills.

How will you make a difference?

The SMT Team Lead is responsible for leading and coordinating all Surface Mount Technology (SMT) manufacturing operations to ensure the production of high-quality electronic assemblies in a safe, efficient, and timely manner. This position provides technical expertise in SMT equipment setup, programming, production support, quality assurance, inventory control, process troubleshooting, and team leadership while ensuring compliance with company procedures, ESD requirements, and industry standards.

Schedule:

Monday – Friday, 7:00am – 3:30pm

What do we want to know about you?
  • Preferred associate’s degree in electronic technology, or equivalent certification, work experience or high school graduate.
  • Minimum 3 years of SMT manufacturing experience.
  • Proven experience operating SMT production equipment, including solder paste printers, Pick-and-Place systems, reflow ovens, and inspection equipment.
  • Strong understanding of PCB assembly processes and electronic components.
  • Experience working with ERP/MRP systems and manufacturing documentation.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, assembly documentation, and work instructions.
  • Strong troubleshooting, organizational, and communication skills.
What will your typical day look like?
  • Maintain daily SMT production documentation and operational records.
  • Review, coordinate, and prioritize production schedules based on assembly requirements, due dates, dispatch and hotlist reports to optimize day-to-day operational activities.
  • Verify assembly revisions by comparing Work Order Routing documentation with Pick-and-Place programming data.
  • Monitor material availability and identify component shortages for upcoming production runs, communicating issues to the Manufacturing Manager.
  • Process and document SMT production transactions within Oracle ERP systems.
  • Print and distribute production drawings, work orders, and manufacturing documentation.
  • Receive incoming components and materials for SMT production. Generate and apply new component identification labels as required.
  • Verify component traceability and proper storage requirements.
  • Load, verify, and optimize Pick-and-Place programs.
  • Confirm PCB revision levels, orientation, and setup accuracy before production release.
  • Install feeders and magazines and ensure proper component loading.
  • Verify and adjust component placement positions within Pick-and-Place systems.
  • Set and adjust conveyor widths throughout the SMT production line.
  • Load programs and operate glue dispensing equipment as required.

  • Perform and coordinate daily, weekly, and monthly preventive maintenance activities on SMT equipment to ensure SMT equipment remains operational, calibrated, and capable of meeting production requirements.
  • Troubleshoot production equipment and process issues to minimize downtime and maintain throughput.
  • Assign tasks, train, support, and provide comprehensive guidance to team members.
  • Lead the team in process improvement; supporting root cause investigations and corrective actions for quality and process-related issues.
  • Ensure daily adherence to workplace safety by wearing required PPE and maintaining a clean, organized work environment that adheres to 5S protocol standards.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Employee is regularly required to see and observe small labels, and components.
  • The employee will normally work in a temperature-controlled office environment, with frequent exposure to electric tools, occasional loud noises and possible exposure to fumes.
