Group Fitness Instructor - Dance (Work Study)

Our dance fitness instructors specialize in teaching choreographed classes either through an existing dance based fitness certification or through one of the following certifications:

  • Zumba - One Day Via Zoom by March 2
  • Swerk - Online certification on March 2

You do not already need a certification to apply however, you would need to be able to work through Spring 2026 to be considered.

Getting Your Certification If Offered The Position

  • Campus Recreation will cover the cost of the initial certification, but after the first year we won't cover the yearly fee of the certifications that require a yearly fee
  • Expected to teach for Campus Rec for a minimum of two semesters.
  • Once certified and have signed the agreement, you can begin instructing.
  • Must attend American Red Cross CPR/AED and First Aid certification course (offered by Campus Recreation)

Interview Timeframe - Week of January 27 and February 3

Once officially hired, you must attend:

  • In-person on-boarding at Human Resources: 2 hours
  • In-person mandatory new hire meeting: 1 hour
  • In-person mandatory department new hire training: 2 hours
  • In-person mandatory area new hire training: 6 hours

Hiring requirements for all Campus Recreation positions

  • If you are a student of East Texas A&M University, you must be currently enrolled or pre-registered in classes holding at least part-time status of 6 hours for undergraduate and 3 hours for graduate.
  • Must pass State of Texas background check.

Job requirements for all Campus Recreation positions:

  • Student workers are only able to work up to 19 hours/per week while classes are in session. (Applies to all positions worked on-campus).
  • Attend mandatory meetings, training, and in-services.
  • Follow and enforce all Campus Recreation policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of and ability to promote Campus Recreation programs.
  • Serve an integral role in the Campus Recreation Emergency Action Plan (EAP).
  • Ability to work well with the recreation team.
  • Ability to work well with participants and patron community.
  • Must be in good academic standing with the University.
  • Must be in good conduct standing with the University.

Position Description

Summary of Responsibilities:

Create change and build positive associations with physical activity and healthy lifestyle habits. Lead, design, and implement group fitness routines that are safe and effective. Engage, educate, and empower members on fitness and well-being.

Program Area: Fitness

Supervision: Assistant Director of Fitness and Wellbeing

Hours Per Week: Must work at least 2-4 fitness classes per week.

Level: Entry

Primary Duties:

  • Instruct and lead group fitness classes in a safe and engaging environment
  • Educate and reinforce proper exercise form and technique for participants
  • Promote knowledge of proper group fitness concepts, i.e.: warm-up, aerobic exercise, flexibility, cool down, etc.
  • Create a welcoming and inclusive environment
  • Support and motivate group fitness participants
  • Offer a variety of exercise modifications to accommodate all fitness levels
  • Monitor access of group fitness classes
  • Assist participants in swiping into class
  • Participate in Continuing Education Credits (CEC's or CEU's)
  • Attend the in house on-boarding classes, shadow shifts, and mentorship program
  • Attend staff in service and meetings
  • Perform other duties assigned

Required Qualifications:

  • Must possess nationally recognized group fitness instructor certification or specialty group fitness certification (condition of employment or hire).
    • Condition of employment - must obtain certification by a certain date and must maintain current Group Fitness Certification
    • ACE, NCCA, Zumba, Yoga, NETA, SCW or other Specialization
  • Ability to lift 50lbs or more as required by job duties

Additional Certifications:

  • Obtaining more fitness certifications will result in a higher hourly pay rate due to the nature of training and knowledge
