Job summary

A group fitness instructor will lead weekly group fitness classes at the Richmond Campus. Instructors are responsible for the well-being of participants and must be welcoming and engaging.

They must participate in monthly team trainings and all-staff Campus Recreation activities, may sub for other instructors, and lead private classes as requested.

This part‑time role emphasizes autonomous work, teamwork, and the development of leadership and communication skills for students at EKU.

Responsibilities

• Design and execute well-formatted group fitness classes and lead participants in an outgoing, welcoming environment.
• Perform administrative duties: prepare equipment, space, check-in participants, and document workouts.
• Collaborate with fitness staff; participate in trainings, meetings, events, and campus recreation activities.

Job Summary/Basic Functions

A group fitness instructor will lead weekly group fitness classes. Instructors are responsible for the well-being of their class members and must be willing to interact socially with participants, making them feel welcome. Along with leading classes, instructors are required to participate in monthly team meetings/trainings and all-staff Campus Recreation training every semester. They must be willing to participate in Campus Recreation special events, sub for other instructors as needed, or lead private classes as requested. Instructors will have the opportunity to be creative, and must be willing to learn and able to work autonomously under little direct supervision. Students hired in this position can expect to walk away with skills in: leadership, communication, teamwork, and problem solving. Campus Recreation positions are designed to equip students with transferrable skills beyond graduation. As such, students must accept the position with a willingness to learn, grow, and work in a team atmosphere.

Job Duties:

• 75% - Design/create and execute well‑formatted group fitness classes. Lead participants in an outgoing, friendly, and welcoming environment. Willingness to learn to take constructive feedback from supervisor and peer regarding coaching skills and leadership. - (Essential)
• 10% - Administrative duties - preparing equipment, preparing class space, communicating with supervisor, checking in class participants, cleaning, documenting workouts. Team trainings to advance instructor/coaching skills, emergency preparedness training. - (Essential)
• 15% - Team work and communication with other fitness and wellness staff. Team meetings, team outings. All‑staff training with all Campus Recreation employees. Staff large events (Health fairs, Rec the Ravine). Regular meetings with supervisor, active communication. - (Essential)
