Job summary

The House of Ruth Maryland seeks a group facilitator to lead psycho-educational groups within its abuse intervention programme at the Community Engagement Center in Baltimore. You will align sessions with the program’s philosophy and deliver the full curriculum, including orientation and intake assessments.

This full-time role requires evening coverage, collaboration with leadership, and the ability to work with diverse participants.

Responsibilities

  • Lead group preparation, facilitation, and debrief with other facilitators.
  • Develop collaborative relationships with community partners.

  • Address issues including referrals and assessments for continued participation.
  • Attend regular staff meetings and participate in program development.

Position Summary

The group facilitator ensures that group work in the agency’s abuse intervention programme is aligned with the programme’s philosophy and that programme participants receive the programme’s full curriculum. Group facilitators work with programme leadership to ensure the goals, objectives, and work efforts of the programme are consistent with the mission of the House of Ruth Maryland and advance the agency and programme’s strategic goals and objectives. The group facilitator will facilitate psycho-educational group sessions, lead orientation sessions and conduct bio-psycho-social intake assessments with new participants. The facilitator should expect to facilitate at least six groups per week. Groups will be virtual and in-person. The group facilitator also assists with special projects such as curriculum development, training, and community outreach, as well as provide backup coverage for other facilitators on an as-needed basis This position is responsible for implementing the Gateway Project’s one-on-one participant support programme, providing individualised support to help participants identify and address barriers, strengthen their engagement in the programme, and successfully complete Gateway Project.

House of Ruth Maryland abuse intervention programme addresses intimate partner violence at its source. The House of Ruth Maryland abuse intervention programme works with men and women who have been abusive toward an intimate partner.

Standard Schedule

This position’s primary work site is House of Ruth Maryland’s Community Engagement Center in Baltimore City. This position is full-time, 40 hours per week position. The schedule is Monday 12:00 am - 10:00 pm, Tuesday 9:00 pm - 7:00 pm, Wednesday 12:00 pm to 10:00 pm, and Thursday 11:00 am - 9:00 pm

Friday, Saturday and Sunday: off.
*This schedule may be adjusted to ensure staff safety and uninterrupted service delivery.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Conduct one-on-one sessions with participants as needed.
  • Conduct virtual and in-person bio-psycho-social intake assessments and orientation sessions.
  • Communicate with Parole & Probation supervision agents regarding participant progress and status.
  • Participate in group preparation, facilitation, and debrief, as well as, peer review sessions with other group facilitators.
  • Develop collaborative relationships with community partners and the general public.
  • Maintain electronic and paper file documentation for groups and participants in keeping with programme standards.
  • Address issues with participants individually, including fee assessments, conflicts, referrals for additional services, and assessment of appropriateness to continue in the programme.
  • Document attendance in accordance with programme policy.
  • Attend and participate in regular staff meetings.
  • Is involved in programme development activities, including group curriculum design, procedure development and implementation, and creation of new programme initiatives.
  • Provide community education and training on intimate partner violence and agency services.
  • On an as-needed basis, is available by phone for crisis counselling.
  • Must work some evenings to provide group coverage.
  • Supervise, assign work to and evaluate the efforts of volunteers and interns
  • Establish, adjust, collect and document participant fees.
  • Make recommendations regarding participant programme status.
  • Represent the programme and the agency in the community.
  • Meet programme standards, quality and service targets.
  • Achieve individual performance plan objectives.

Experience, Education, Certifications/Licenses
  • Bachelor’s degree in a human service field is preferred and a demonstrated ability to speak, read and write fluent English is required.
  • Candidates with experience facilitating curriculum-based groups are preferred. Must be violence-free in own life.
  • Minimum 1 year experience facilitating curriculum-based groups.
  • Experience working in the criminal justice system and with marginalised or oppressed groups is preferred.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Client assessment, group work, project planning, and conflict management skills are required. Computer literate (MS Office, internet, e-mail) and experience working within a data tracking system are necessary.
  • Applicants must be able to confidently work with a population that has a history of violent and criminal behaviours. The ability to understand intimate partner violence and how it affects the participant population and the ability to work with people from diverse backgrounds are a must.
  • Must be violence-free in own life with no charges of violence within a minimum of three years. If the applicant has ever been identified as a perpetrator of domestic violence the applicant must have successfully completed a certified abuser intervention program.

  • Program procedures are carried out in a uniform manner, with a focus on compassion for programme participants and consistency in explanation of purpose.

  • Ability to successfully complete the Gateway Project abuse intervention programme by being able to acknowledge the use of abusive behaviours and commit to working on self.
  • Work is documented clearly, concisely, and in keeping with agency accepted professional standards.
  • Must be violence free, with no charges of violence within a minimum of three years. If applicant has ever been charged with a domestically-related crime, the applicant must have successfully completed a state-certified abuse intervention programme.
