Position Summary
The Group Exercise Instructor is responsible for designing and instructing safe, high-quality, effective, challenging, and fun group exercise classes based on the class format and description.
Essential Functions
- Design and teach effective, safe, and enjoyable exercise classes using proper progressions and cueing techniques, following guidelines.
- Select appropriate music and tempo suitable for the class format and population served.
- Oversee the proper use, maintenance, and cleaning of equipment and supplies.
- Attend all mandatory staff meetings.
- Design classes that adhere to the format and are appropriate for participants' abilities; teach with energy and enthusiasm.
- Demonstrate skills clearly, explain them effectively, and work at an appropriate skill and intensity level, emphasizing members' workouts.
- Frequently demonstrate multiple modifications, encourage members to modify movements, and monitor their technique, intensity, and hydration.
- Use clear verbal and physical cues in advance of movement changes.
- Plan class choreography in advance, regularly changing music and routines.
- Accurately record class attendance.
- Begin and end classes on time; arrive at least 5 minutes early with all equipment ready; leave the area safe and clean.
- Maintain positive rapport with participants and encourage involvement in YMCA programs and events.
- Learn participants' names, engage in conversation, and promote interaction.
- Arrange for a substitute instructor if unable to teach and notify the supervisor.
- May be required to travel to multiple locations or lead virtual classes.
- Follow child abuse and neglect reporting procedures, including documentation and notifying relevant departments.
Qualifications
Education
- High school diploma or GED required; Associate's degree preferred.
Certifications & Requirements
- CPR certification (Basic Life Support or Professional Rescuer), First Aid, and Emergency Oxygen within 30 days of hire.
- Current national NCCA-accredited Group Exercise Instructor certification or YMCA certification; if not, obtain within 90 days.
- Specialty class format certification or training (e.g., Zumba, yoga, aquatic) as applicable, to be obtained within 90 days if not already certified.
- Maintain all certifications.

- Willingness to act as a mandated reporter for child abuse and neglect.
