Job summary

The YMCA of Greenville is seeking a part-time Group Exercise Instructor for Water Aerobics. You will lead safe, effective water workouts, energize participants, and manage class flow from warm-up to cool-down.

Responsibilities include punctual starts, equipment setup, incident reporting, and teamwork with other instructors. Certifications in group exercise and water fitness are required, with CPR/AED and First Aid as well.

Qualifications

  • Nationally recognized certifications to teach Group Exercise.
  • Water fitness certification required (AEA/Water in Motion).
  • CPR/AED & First Aid are required.
  • Strong member service and anatomy knowledge needed.
  • MS Office and email proficiency required.

Responsibilities

  • Arrive on time to clock in and prepare to teach the class.
  • Begin and end classes on time with proper format and equipment.
  • Keep classes fresh with new music and movements.
  • Maintain safety and know emergency procedures (First Aid, AED).
  • Complete incident reports and keep room clean after sessions.
  • Collaborate with staff and substitute when needed.
  • Engage members and promote the program appropriately.

Responsibilities
  • Arrives at the branch YMCA in a timely manner in order to clock or sign in and make necessary preparations to teach the class.
  • Begins and ends classes on time.
  • Is prepared to teach the assigned class by establishing and announcing the class format and design. All equipment and music is appropriate for the class.
  • All classes taught include a warm up, main body, and cool down (warm down-water classes) and stretch.
  • Keeps classes fresh by incorporating new music, and exercises or movements patterns to classes.
  • Knows YMCA emergency procedures. Knows location of First Aid and AED equipment.
  • Reports all incidents/injuries to supervisor or MOD.Fills out an incident report before leaving the building.
  • Responsible to leave the room in a clean and orderly condition, ensuring that all equipment is turned off and returned to appropriate storage areas, and exercise mats and bikes are wiped down.
  • Works cooperatively with supervisor and fellow instructors as part of a fitness team and demonstrates a team spirit by substituting for other instructors when available.
  • Speaks positively about other instructors to members and is knowledgeable about the group exercise program in order to recommend classes to members based on their abilities and/or interests.
  • Acts as an ambassador for the YMCA, connecting members by learning their names.
  • Adhere to policies related to boundaries with consumers
  • Attend/complete required abuse risk management training
  • Adhere to procedures related to managing high-risk activities and supervising consumers
  • Follow mandated reporting requirements
  • Adhere to job specific abuse risk management responsibilities
Qualifications

Instructors teaching land based classes must hold

  • A current certification with a nationally recognized organization such as ACE (American Council on Exercise), AFAA (Aerobics & Fitness Association of America), ACSM, NETA (National Exercise Trainers) to teach Group Exercise classes.
  • Must currently hold a Water Art Certification or other national recognized water fitness certifications, such as AEA and Water in Motion.
  • Proficient with Water Exercises and able to maintain enthusiasm during class instruction.
  • Instructors hold a current CPR/AED, First Aid, Child Abuse Prevention and BBP certification.
  • Excellent member service skills.
  • Excellent knowledge of human anatomy, kinesiology, & physiology.
  • Marketing and sales ability.
  • Computer skills involving Microsoft Office and email.
  • Desire for health, wellness, and fitness promotion.
  • Ability to perform under stress and reach deadlines.
  • Excellent time management skills.
  • Personal passion for health and fitness.

Recommended

  • Experience and/or certification in other area of Water Fitness.
