The Group Exercise Instructor will lead health club members in a group environment through a pre-arranged format of exercises designed to enhance overall fitness, strength, and endurance, while ensuring the safety of the members. The instructor will also serve as a resource to educate gym members on various aspects of fitness.
Responsibilities:
Pre-class Preparation:
- Arrive 10 to 15 minutes before the scheduled start to interact with members, answer questions, inquire about their fitness progress, and introduce new participants.
- Know participants on an individual basis, understanding their fitness capabilities.
- Wear appropriate fitness attire and proper footwear; when possible, wear company-branded attire.
- Prepare music for class, ensuring it is ready and appropriate.
- Check that all equipment is functioning correctly.
Check in participants to verify membership.
During Class Responsibilities:
- Introduce yourself and the class format.
- Identify first-timers and assess their fitness levels privately.
- Ensure clear verbal instructions, appropriate volume, and conducive atmosphere.
- Monitor participants for correct form and offer variations to accommodate all fitness levels.
- Create a motivational and enjoyable environment.
After Class Responsibilities:
- Remove music and ensure the room is ready for the next class.
- Address participant questions and feedback.
- Complete and submit the class roster.
Additional Responsibilities:
- Start and end classes on time, adjusting as needed.
- If teaching last class of the day, follow proper closing procedures.
- Find substitutes if unable to teach and notify the Group Exercise Director.
- Maintain dependability and consistency in scheduling.
- Attend staff meetings, follow time recording procedures, and prepare incident reports if necessary.
- Maintain professionalism and promote the company.
Qualifications & Requirements:
- At least six months of group exercise teaching experience preferred.
- Knowledge of safe exercise techniques, physiology, and body mechanics.
- Ability to perform various exercise routines and operate audio equipment.
- Certifications in specialized skills (e.g., Yoga, Pilates) with proof of education.
- Group fitness certification by ACE, AFAA, or ACSM.
- Current CPR and first aid certifications.
- Physical ability to perform light weights, bending, jumping, running, reaching, walking, hopping, spinning, and kicking.
