Job summary

A leading organization is seeking a passionate group fitness instructor to inspire members through various exercise classes. The instructor will foster community engagement by delivering classes and maintaining certifications. Qualifications

  • Proof of current NCCA Group Fitness Certification or Specialty Certification.
  • Experience teaching group exercise classes preferred.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours.

Responsibilities

  • Instructs a minimum of 2 classes per week and maintains class attendance.
  • Builds authentic relationships with members and supports their goals.
  • Maintains equipment and cleanliness in the group exercise area.

Job description

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS include the following:

  • Thinks, communicates and behaves as a cause-driven leader and role model for other staff and members when it comes to desired staff behaviors; promotes youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility in all job-related functions.
  • Designs, prepares, and delivers class routines as directed by the supervisor that meet all the necessary components and safe guidelines in accordance with current accepted practices of exercise physiology.
  • Builds effective, authentic relationships with members; helps members connect with each other and the YMCA
  • Engages the members and supports them in achieving their goals related to healthy living
  • Maintains valid national certification specific to the class format they are delivering at all times as well as a working knowledge of wellness and trends to provide effective information and support to members.
  • Record accurate class attendance and maintain a minimum of 60% target attendance with continual growth.
  • Instructs a minimum of 2 classes per week (8/month) including but not limited to at least one sub shift per quarter, and appropriately securing a substitute instructor for own classes when needed.
  • Begins and ends class at the scheduled time.
  • Where needed, sets up equipment for class, assists members in cleaning equipment before and after class.
  • Maintains equipment and keeps the group exercise area clean.
  • Participates in Community Outreach campaign and shares announcements as directed by supervisor
  • Follows YMCA policies and procedures; responds to emergency situations.

    QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.
  • Proof of current NCCA Group Fitness Certification (ACE, NETA, or AFAA) or Specialty/ Trademarked Certification upon hire (i.e. cycling, yoga, pilates, Zumba, Pound, Les Mills BODYPUMP; in some circumstances, an NCCA Certified Personal Trainer Certification may be accepted in lieu of Group Fitness.
  • Instructor is responsible to keep all certifications current and in good standing.
  • Outgoing personality with a natural ability to build positive and trusting relationships
  • Strong customer service skills and the ability to promote programs and services
  • Demonstrates a professional demeanor, enthusiastic and supportive attitude and genuine commitment to providing quality service
  • Willing to work flexible work hours based on evolving needs of the members, class coverage and schedule adjustments
  • High school diploma and experience teaching group exercise classes preferred.
  • Successful completion of class instruction demo by supervisor or designee upon hire.
  • Must have current CPR/First aid & AED certification within the first 30 days of employment; until certification is obtained, cannot work alone.
  • All mandatory YMCA of Central Ohio training(s) must be completed by the required date.
