Job summary

The City of Boca Raton is seeking a Park Maintenance Worker responsible for the upkeep and improvement of municipal parks and grounds. This role includes maintaining aesthetic aspects of parks, conducting safety checks, and performing repairs. The ideal candidate should possess general maintenance skills, work effectively with a team, and adhere to safety regulations. Flexible working hours of up to 25 per week may include holidays and weekends.

Qualifications

  • Six months of general maintenance experience preferred.
  • Possession of a Florida Restricted Use Pesticide license may be required.
  • Valid Florida Class E driver's license with clean driving record.

Job description

Performs intermediate semi-skilled work in the maintenance of municipal parks and grounds, including general park areas, roadway medians and swales, golf greens, fairways, tees, bunkers and rough, and clay/turf athletic fields and clay tennis courts. Installs, repairs, maintains and cares for parks, grounds and related structures and equipment; does related work as required. Work is performed under regular supervision.

  • Works as a member of a crew engaged in the maintenance, repair, and improvement of parks, grounds, clay tennis courts, or general park areas.
  • Repairs and maintains park areas and buildings; performs minor building, custodial, repair, and maintenance work.
  • Completes safety inspections on playground equipment, boardwalks, docks, restrooms, park amenities, etc.
  • Collects trash, debris and garbage and disposes of same; repairs grills, tables, trash receptacles, benches, gates and fences; replaces light bulbs.
  • Participates in the propagation, planting, and transplanting of appropriate trees, shrubs, sod and flowers.
  • Trims hedges; prunes trees, plants, and flowers; mows grass, pulls weeds and edges.
  • Performs plant maintenance and care tasks; rakes leaves and spreads mulch; waters plants.
  • Lays sod, applies grass seed, fertilizer, insecticides, pesticides, and herbicides; follows the guidelines and requirements set forth by the state, county and city rules and regulations.
  • Mows, edges, blows, waters; weeds, aerates and fertilizes parks and grounds, athletic field turf, general park areas, removes weeds from parks and grounds, including turf, landscape beds, tree rings and picnic areas.
  • Maintains tennis courts, installs posts, net supports and nets.
  • Operates and performs preventive maintenance and general repair of maintenance groundskeeping equipment, including mowers, chain saws, tractors, front-end loaders, trenchers, aerators, top dressers, dump trucks, small power equipment and similar equipment.
  • Maintain parks and grounds by mowing, edging, watering, and fertilizing parks, fields, golf courses, tennis courts, and green spaces.
  • Perform repairs and upkeep by fixing minor issues with park buildings, equipment, and facilities, including grills, tables, benches, and light fixtures.
  • Manage waste by collecting trash and litter while ensuring waste bins are clean and emptied.
  • Care for landscaping by planting, mulching, trimming, and maintaining trees, shrubs, and flowers.
  • Operate and maintain equipment by safely using and servicing groundskeeping tools such as mowers, tractors, and chainsaws.
  • Collaborate with the team by assisting with tasks, projects, and special events to enhance park aesthetics, functionality, and safety.
  • Conduct safety inspections by regularly assessing playgrounds, boardwalks, docks, and other park areas for potential hazards.
  • Control weeds and turf by removing weeds and applying fertilizers and pesticides to maintain healthy turf.
  • Install and treat grass by laying sod, applying grass seed, and using fertilizers, insecticides, pesticides, and herbicides in compliance with state, county, and city regulations.

Related tasks:

  • Inspects for safety issues and maintenance needs, completing the necessary inspection forms and paperwork.
  • Assists with pipe repairs, fixes sprinkler heads, helps with some irrigation repairs, and cleans tools and equipment.
  • Assists with carpentry repairs on boardwalks, docks, and playgrounds.
  • Performs other related tasks as needed.

Knowledge of:
  • General knowledge of the methods, materials, and practices used in parks and, general park area maintenance.
  • General knowledge of the equipment used to maintain parks and grounds, general park area and its safe operation.
  • General knowledge of the tools, materials, and equipment used in general maintenance work.
  • General knowledge of the materials, equipment, tools, and techniques of the standard building trades.
  • General knowledge of safety precautions applicable to the duties of the class.

Skilled in:

  • Operation of parks and grounds, and general park area maintenance equipment
  • Using machinery such as Golf carts and lawn equipment.
Ability to:
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, patrons, and the general public.
  • Understand and follow oral and written directions.
  • Use common hand tools.
  • Operate simple machinery.
  • Perform manual labor for extended periods.
  • Compose and send e-mail and basic computer skills to prepare evaluations.

  • Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school.
  • Six (6) months of general maintenance experience.
  • Position may require possession of a Florida Restricted Use Pesticide license, a Best Management Practices Certification, and/or Fertilizers Applicators License.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Possession of a valid State of Florida Class E driver's license with no more than six (6) points in a three (3) year period.
