The Groundskeeper/Landscaper position will be responsible for maintaining a safe, functional, and aesthetically pleasing environment for St. Monica’s Recreation Center. This primarily outdoor position requires adapting to seasonal demands and operating a variety of groundskeeping/landscaping power equipment. This may include performing a variety of tasks such as snow removal, mowing of lawns, edging, leaf disposal, laying of mulch, planting flowers/trees, pruning trees, and ensuring the overall cleanliness and attractiveness of St. Monica’s Recreation Center’s grounds. This position will work in tandem with the Grounds and Maintenance team and be all hands-on deck as required to work as a back-up for indoor custodial groundskeeper projects.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The following list of duties is not exhaustive and may be revised by management as needed.
- Property Upkeep and Inspections: Conducts daily property inspections, remove trash and debris, clean sidewalks, parking lots, and roadways to maintain strong curb appeal.
- Grounds and Landscape Maintenance: Performs routine grounds maintenance, including mowing, edging, fertilizing, aerating lawns, snow and ice removal, and general outdoor upkeep.
- Plant Care and Horticulture: Plants, waters, prunes, weeds, and mulches flowers, shrubs, trees, and other vegetation; fertilizers and pesticides to promote healthy growth and control weeds and pests.
- Landscape Installation: Assists with installation of landscape features such as flower beds, walkways, and outdoor structures while maintaining overall design integrity.
- Irrigation System Maintenance: Monitors, maintains, and repairs irrigation systems to ensure proper and efficient watering of landscaped areas.
- Equipment Operation and Maintenance: Operates landscaping equipment, including mowers, trimmers, blowers, and heavy machinery (e.g., skid steers, compact loaders, backhoes); perform routine inspections, safety checks, and minor repairs to ensure proper working condition.
- Safety and Chemical Compliance: Follows OSHA standards and safety protocols; safely handle, store, and apply landscaping chemicals, including fertilizers, pesticides, and cleaners; ensure outdoor areas remain safe for use.
- General Maintenance and Repairs: Performs basic groundskeeping and facility repairs, including painting, minor irrigation plumbing, and upkeep of outdoor structures and surfaces.
- Team Collaboration and Recordkeeping: Collaborates with team members to prioritize tasks; maintains records of maintenance schedules, completed work, equipment upkeep, and inventory of supplies.
- Backup Indoor Custodial/Groundskeeper Support: Serves as a back-up for indoor custodian/ groundskeeper projects and assists with setup and teardown of equipment for events as needed.
- Additional Duties: Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications and Skills
- Detail-oriented with strong organizational and communication skills
- Discreet and respectful of guest privacy
- Knowledge of plant care, pest management, and landscaping techniques
- Experience operating landscaping equipment (mowers, edgers, blowers, irrigation systems, tractors, utility vehicles)
- Understanding of fertilizers, pesticides, and other chemicals, with a safety-conscious approach to handling
- Skilled in following procedures and interpreting manuals and Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) to ensure proper and safe use of cleaners, fertilizers, and pesticides
- Able to work independently and as part of a team
- Comfortable working outdoors in varying weather conditions
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and climb ladders up to 10 feet
Education and Experience
- 2+ years of experience in outdoor groundskeeping, landscaping, plant care, horticulture, or related field.
- Ability to operate groundskeeping/landscaping tools safely and efficiently.
- Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions including extreme cold and heat.
- Education should be sufficient to read, write, and speak as needed for the job.
- Attention to detail and ability to maintain clean, well-groomed, and aesthetically pleasing grounds.

- The noise level is generally loud due to the operation of groundskeeper/landscaping power equipment including, but not limited to blowers, mowers, and trimmers. Proper hearing protection is required.
- Periodically exposed to hazardous chemicals including fertilizers and pesticides.
- Periodically exposed to hazards that produce cuts, burns, and insect bites.
- May occasionally require visits to work at other SOT facilities or off-site meetings.
