Job description

Join to apply for the GROUNDSKEEPER II role at The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley.

To provide technical and supervisory skills in planning, organizing, and directing the maintenance of grounds. Responsible for the maintenance and beautification of all grounds including gardens, landscaped areas, and parking areas.

Description of Duties
  1. Supervises and participates in preparing ground for planting, and in planting, cultivating, fertilizing, watering, and pruning flowers, shrubs, and trees.
  2. Watches for pests, disease, or other deteriorating agents and takes necessary steps for eradication.
  3. Assists in training other employees in proper care of lawns and plants, spraying, cultivation, and operation of tools and equipment.
  4. Cleans and maintains tools, equipment, materials, and supplies.
  5. Assists with minor irrigation maintenance and repairs.
  6. Recommends purchase of fertilizers and insecticides.
  7. Rearranges flower beds and gardens.
  8. Operates and prepares grounds care equipment.
  9. Performs minor repairs on equipment and provides technical assistance.
  10. May be required to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and during campus emergencies.
  11. Performs other duties as assigned.
Supervision

Received: General direction from supervisor.

Given: Supervision of assigned staff.

Minimum Education

Completion of 6th grade; ability to read and write English sufficiently to understand MSDS, work orders, and complete work documentation.

Preferred Education

High School Diploma or GED.

Licenses/Certifications

Authorized to operate a University-Owned Vehicle; subject to motor vehicle record check.

Experience

At least 2 years of experience in plant, tree, and lawn care, and operation of grounds equipment.

Equipment Skills

Operation of tractors, cultivators, hedgers, mowers, and similar equipment.

Working Conditions

Outdoor environment, exposure to weather, chemicals, and mechanical hazards; some travel and weekend work required.

Other

Must be physically capable of performing manual tasks, including lifting up to 100 lbs., digging, climbing, and manual labor; pre-employment physical required.
