Qualifications
Required
- Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school or possession of a General Equivalency Diploma (GED) certificate.
- Some experience in grounds maintenance at the apprentice II or equivalent level.
- Possession of an appropriate, valid motor vehicle operator's license with a good driving record.
- May be required to operate a commercial motor vehicle, as defined below, and possess a Commercial Driver's License CDL-A.
- "Commercial Motor Vehicle" is defined as a motor vehicle or combination of motor vehicles used in commerce to transport passengers or property if the motor vehicle has any of the following:
- A gross vehicle weight rating of 26,001 or more pounds inclusive of a towed unit with a gross vehicle weight rating of more than 10,000 pounds.
- A gross vehicle weight rating of 26,001 or more pounds.
- Is designed to transport 16 or more passengers, including the driver.
- Is of any size and is used in the transportation of hazardous materials requiring placards.
- May be required to work an evening and/or night shift on a regular or rotating basis, accept call-back overtime or regular overtime, and/or agree to assume an emergency call-out list status.
- Knowledge of the methods and skills in the use of equipment, materials, and tools appropriate for grounds maintenance on a variety of surfaces and terrains.
- Knowledge of common hazards and necessary safety precautions.
- Knowledge of local, state, and national codes.
- Ability to perform mechanical minor repairs on heavy tools and equipment.
- Ability to read and interpret instructions, diagrams, sketches, blueprints, and manufacturers' manuals.
- Capability to estimate time and material needs and to perform routine tasks and arithmetic computations.
Preferred
- Completion of an acceptable apprentice-level landscape, hardscape, or public works training program.
- Basic computer skills.
Major Duties/Essential Functions
- Performs a variety of skilled journey-level grounds, construction, repair, or maintenance activities.
- Installs and repairs playground equipment.
- Moves and places temporary structures and trailers.
- Mixes, pours, and finishes concrete, lays bricks and cinder blocks.
- Installs and repairs sewer and water lines.
- Lays and repairs asphalt roads and parking lots; plants, cuts, and trims trees and lawns.
- Operates a variety of gasoline and diesel-powered trucks, tractors, mowers, and towed equipment on a variety of terrains during construction, maintenance work, and snowplowing work.
- Loads and unloads trucks.
- Removes trash and paper from grounds and fences.
- Maintains and, as needed, performs repair of manual and mechanical equipment.
- Drives a vehicle to and from locations and keeps the vehicle supplied with tools and materials.
- Performs operator maintenance on vehicles and keeps them in orderly condition.
- Keeps records and makes reports of work accomplished and materials used.
- Performs related duties as required or assigned.
Work Environment/Physical Requirements
This job requires strength, agility, dexterity, and visual acuity to perform all tasks. While performing the duties of this job, the employee must adhere to all site safety regulations and may be required to regularly stand, sit, walk, bend, climb ladders, and/or kneel. There may be exposure to extreme heat and cold, outdoor environments, heavy equipment, moving machinery, fumes, toxic or caustic chemicals, and loud noises. This job requires lifting up to 25 lbs., periodically lifting/moving up to 50 lbs., and occasional lifting/moving up to 100 lbs. alone or with assistance.
