Job summary

The Department of Health and Social Services (DHSS) is seeking a Groundskeeper I to maintain State grounds and perform routine landscaping tasks. You will manage lawns, plantings, and seasonal care, operate a range of equipment, and support the maintenance team on larger projects with safety and collaboration in mind.

Applicants must demonstrate knowledge of groundskeeping equipment and comply with health, safety, and occurrence standards; pre-employment checks and standard state requirements

• Knowledge of operating groundskeeping equipment such as mowers, pruners, edgers, and trimmers.

Responsibilities

• Performs routine maintenance of lawns, flowers, shrubs, and trees including planting, fertilizing, transplanting, irrigating, weeding, mulching, pruning, mowing, edging, and trimming.
• Applies pesticides and herbicides safely and in accordance with health and safety regulations.
• Performs seasonal care such as planting in spring or leaf removal in fall.
• Maintains driveways, steps, and walkways; assists in grading and repair.
• Operates and maintains equipment and tools including mowers, tractors, saws, sprayers, blowers, edgers, grass shears, and trimmers.
• Collaborates with maintenance team on larger projects.
• Assists in preparation and cleanup for outdoor events.
• May perform minor repairs on outdoor structures and assist trades personnel as required.
• Communicates effectively with people across cultures and abilities.
• Performs other related duties as required.

Summary Statement

A Groundskeeper I is responsible for maintaining aesthetically pleasing State grounds including performing general groundskeeping and routine maintenance work.

Essential Functions

• Performs routine maintenance of lawn, flowers, shrubs, and trees involving planting, fertilizing, transplanting, irrigating, weeding, mulching, pruning, mowing, edging, and trimming.
• Applies pesticides and herbicides safely and responsibly when needed in accordance with all relevant health and safety regulations and standards.
• Performs seasonal care such as planting in the spring or leaf removal in the fall.
• Maintains driveways, steps, and walkways by removing snow or ice, trash and debris, and may assist in grading and repair.
• Operates and maintains a variety of equipment and hand tools including mowers, tractors, saws, sprayers, blowers, edgers, grass shears, and trimmers.
• Collaborates with maintenance team members on larger projects.
• Assists in the preparation and cleanup for outdoor events.
• May perform minor repairs on outdoor structures such as fences, gates, and walkways and assist trades personnel in painting and other minor repairs as required.
• Communicates and interacts effectively with people across cultures, ranges of ability, genders, ethnicities, ages, and races.
• Performs other related duties as required.

Job Requirements

Applicants must have education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas:

• Knowledge of operating groundskeeping or landscaping equipment such as mowers, tractors, saws, sprayers, pruners, edgers, grass shears and trimmers.

All new hires are required to report to the Statewide New Employee Orientation (SNEO) on their first day of employment. Sessions are held at designated locations in Kent or New Castle County.

This position is a classification organized under an exclusive bargaining representative (labor organization) that has been elected by employees as their representative for collective bargaining and other applicable terms and conditions of employment, in accordance with Title 29, Chapter 59 and Title 19, Chapter 13 and 16. This position is covered by a collective bargaining agreement based on its individual terms.
