Job summary

The Department of Health and Social Services (DHSS) in Delaware is seeking a casual/seasonal Groundskeeper to support the Herman Holloway Campus and State Service Centers. You will perform routine lawn and landscape maintenance, plantings, seasonal tasks, and snow removal, using mowers, tractors, and hand tools, while collaborating with the maintenance team and ensuring safe, efficient outdoor operations.

• Knowledge of operating groundskeeping equipment such as mowers, tractors, sprayers, pruners, edgers, grass shears and trimmers.

Responsibilities

• Performs routine maintenance of lawn, flowers, shrubs, and trees, including planting, fertilizing, transplanting, irrigating, weeding, mulching, pruning, mowing, edging, and trimming.
• Applies pesticides and herbicides safely and in accordance with regulations and standards.
• Performs seasonal tasks such as planting in spring or leaf removal in fall.
• Maintains driveways, steps, and walkways by removing snow or ice, trash and debris; assists in grading and repair.
• Operates and maintains equipment and hand tools including mowers, tractors, saws, sprayers, blowers, edgers, grass shears, and trimmers.
• Collaborates with maintenance team on larger projects; assists in event setups and outdoor-related tasks.
• May perform minor repairs on outdoor structures and assist trades personnel in painting and other minor repairs.
• Communicates effectively with a diverse workforce.

Summary Statement

The incumbent in this position provides grounds keeping services and routine maintenance work on the Herman Holloway Campus and for the State Service Centers in the Northern Region. This includes snow removal.

• Operates and maintains a variety of equipment and hand tools including mowers, tractors, saws, sprayers, blowers, edgers, grass shears, and trimmers.
• Collaborates with maintenance team members on larger projects.
• Assists in the preparation and cleanup for outdoor events.
• May perform minor repairs on outdoor structures such as fences, gates, and walkways and assist trades personnel in painting and other minor repairs as required.
• Communicates and interacts effectively with people across cultures, ranges of ability, genders, ethnicities, ages, and races.
• Performs other related duties as required.

Job Requirements

Applicants must have education, training and/or experience demonstrating competence in each of the following areas:

• Knowledge of operating groundskeeping or landscaping equipment such as mowers, tractors, saws, sprayers, pruners, edgers, grass shears and trimmers.

Additional Posting Information

This is a Casual/Seasonal position which is a non-pension eligible position without healthcare and/or other benefits.
