Job summary

Copperas Cove ISD is seeking a Groundskeeper I to maintain safe and attractive district grounds, athletic fields, and outdoor facilities in compliance with safety standards. This non-exempt, full-time role reports to the Director of Maintenance and requires the ability to read instructions and operate lawn equipment.

Responsibilities include mowing, edging, pruning, litter removal, and equipment maintenance; must be able to lift up to 100 pounds, work outdoors year-round, and hold a Texas

JOB TITLE: Groundskeeper I

HOUR STATUS: Non-exempt

REPORTS TO: Director of Maintenance

PAY GRADE: Aux 2/260 Days

DEPT./SCHOOL: Maintenance

PRIMARY PURPOSE

Maintain safe, functional, and attractive grounds, landscaping, athletic fields, and outdoor facilities for the district in compliance with safety, environmental, and regulatory standards.

QUALIFICATIONS
Education/Certification
  • High school diploma or GED (preferred)
  • Ability to read and understand written and verbal instructions
  • Valid Texas driver’s license
Special Knowledge/Skills
  • Ability to read and follow operating and safety instructions
  • Ability to communicate effectively (verbally and in writing)
  • Ability to operate and maintain mowers and landscaping equipment
  • Ability to work independently and with a team

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
  • Mow, trim, edge, and detail all district grounds, including athletic fields, playgrounds, parking areas, and landscaped areas.
  • Prune trees, shrubs, and hedges to ensure health, appearance, and safety; remove dead or hazardous limbs.
  • Remove dirt, rubbish, litter, and refuse from campuses, parking lots, sidewalks, and outdoor facilities.
  • Transport workers, equipment, and materials to work sites throughout the district.
  • Operate all grounds equipment and tools following established safety procedures and district protocols.
  • Assist with snow/ice removal or storm cleanup as needed.
  • Report safety hazards, equipment malfunctions, and grounds-related facility issues to supervisors promptly.
EQUIPMENT USED

Tractor and mower; riding and reel mowers; gas-powered weed trimmer; blower; edger; sprayer; chainsaw; hedge trimmer; pruning tools; irrigation controllers; post hole auger; aerator; grader blade; backhoe; skid steer; light truck or van.

WORKING CONDITIONS
Mental Demands

Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; communicate effectively; work independently and as part of a team; prioritize multiple tasks; maintain attention to detail and safety.

Physical Demands/Environmental Factors

Frequent districtwide travel. Continual walking, standing, climbing, stooping, bending, kneeling, reaching, heavy lifting, and carrying. Ability to operate tractors, mowers, and landscaping equipment. Work outdoors year-round in extreme temperatures, inclement weather, and around moving vehicles and equipment. Exposure to noise, vibration, dust, dirt, and hazardous chemicals (fertilizers, herbicides, pesticides). Must be able to lift up to 100 pounds occasionally and 50 pounds frequently.
