Job summary

Oklahoma State University (OSU) Stillwater is seeking a Grounds Maintenance Assistant to support all Lake Carl Blackwell grounds operations. You will operate small engine equipment and perform carpentry, painting, plumbing tasks, and daily restroom cleaning.

The role demands outdoor work in extreme weather, physical stamina for frequent lifting up to 50 pounds, and occasional weekend/evening shifts. A valid driver’s license is required and prior grounds experience is preferred.

Qualifications

• High School/GED or equivalent is required.
• At least 1 year of grounds/maintenance experience or related field.

Responsibilities

• Operate power equipment such as lawn mower, weed eater, small tractor, chainsaw, and hand tools.
• Assist with carpentry, minor construction, painting, and plumbing tasks as needed to maintain grounds.
• Perform daily cleaning of public restrooms, shower houses, and trash disposal around lake area.
• Assist with removal of human waste from portable toilets using pumping units.
• Work outdoors in varying temperatures and weather; heavy physical activity and lifting up to 50 pounds frequently and more than 50 pounds occasionally.
• Occasional weekend and evening hours are required.

About This Position

This position will assist with all Lake Carl Blackwell grounds maintenance phases and operations. Responsible for safely operating power equipment, including lawn mower, weed eater, small tractor, chainsaw, or hand equipment. Required to assist with carpentry, minor construction, painting, plumbing tasks, and any task necessary to maintain the safety and appearance of the grounds at Lake Carl Blackwell. It also includes daily cleaning of public restrooms, shower houses, and disposing of trash from around the lake area. The position will work with removing of human waste from portable toilets via pumping units. The position requires working in the outdoors, tolerating extreme temperatures and weather. Position operates machinery with potentially hazardous noise levels and moving parts. The position also requires frequent, strenuous physical activity, including standing, walking, bending, stooping, carrying, and lifting. The position is heavy in manual labor and requires the physical ability to lift to 50 pounds frequently and occasionally lift more than 50 pounds. The position will require weekend and evening hours at various times of the year.

Required Qualifications

• High School/GED (degree must be conferred on or before agreed upon start date)
• One year of grounds/maintenance or related field.

Certifications, Registrations, And/or Licenses

A valid Driver's License must be maintained for the operation of an OSU vehicle, which is required in the performance of the job duties as assigned.

Skills, Proficiencies, And/or Knowledge

Ability to operate small engine equipment.

Ability to follow directions, use appropriate safety measures for tools and equipment used to perform tasks.

Ability to effectively use grounds maintenance tools, and the ability to work efficiently independently and as part of a team.

This position requires frequent strenuous physical activity, including standing, walking, bending, stooping, carrying and lifting (up to 50 pounds frequently and in excess of 50 pounds occasionally).

This position will work with the removal of human wastes from portable toilets and vault toilets, and cleaning of the public restrooms and shower facilities daily. This incumbent will need to have proof of current immunizations for Hepatitis A, B, and Tetanus or receive immunizations or boosters as a safety requirement of the position, with the cost to be covered by the department.
