Job description

What You’ll Do:

Works under direction and requires thorough knowledge of groundskeeping.

  1. Act as lead worker (e.g., provides work direction and training) over lower-level workers (e.g., groundskeeper 1, groundskeeper 2, maintenance repair worker 1) and/or inmates in groundskeeping tasks such as propagation, grooming, maintenance, preparation, cultivation, and care for turf, lawns, trees, shrubs, and flowers.
  2. Participates in herbicidal spraying.
  3. Removes, installs, and maintains plant materials.
  4. Prunes, mulches, waters, and applies insecticides, pesticides, and fertilizers.
  5. Transplants trees.
  6. Mows lawns; plants and prepares flower beds.
  7. Removes trash and leaves from grounds; trims hedges.
  8. Repairs erosion problems.
  9. Monitors lower-level workers or inmates in cleaning walks, roads, and parking areas, including ice, snow, and litter removal.
  10. Performs record keeping, documentation, and reporting tasks; orders materials, supplies, and equipment.
  11. Maintains records regarding care and planting of trees, shrubs, and flowers.
  12. Informs supervisor of materials needed for planting, such as seeds, seedlings, trees, bulbs, plants, bushes, and fertilizer.
  13. Monitors subordinates and participates in maintenance and repair of equipment and machinery, including landscape equipment, and repairs of walks, roads, parking areas, and shelters. Assists maintenance workers with underground water and electrical line repairs.
  14. Assumes duties of supervisor in their absence.
  15. Inspects contract projects related to herbicidal spraying, tree removal, or turf fertilization.
  16. Participates in removal of dead animals.
  17. Serves on institutional committees.
  18. Attends training, seminars, and meetings as required.
  19. Performs security functions as required, such as man-down, shakedown, and inmate movement.
Qualifications:

Formal education in English and arithmetic, including reading, writing, speaking English, fractions, decimals, and percentages. 12 months of training or experience in groundskeeping activities and use of related equipment (e.g., applying sprays, planting, transplanting, pruning, trimming, snow removal). Valid commercial driver's license required if operating regulated motor equipment, as per Ohio Revised Code sections 4506.01 and 4506.12.

Alternatively, 6 months of experience as Groundskeeper 2 (job code 53612). Valid commercial driver's license required if operating regulated motor equipment.

Or equivalent evidence of the minimum class qualifications for employment.
