Responsibilities

  • Performs routine landscape maintenance (mowing, trimming, edging, debris removal) with appropriate equipment.
  • Performs snow removal and de-icing treatments as needed.
  • On-call availability during the winter months.
  • Conducts basic equipment maintenance and reports issues to supervisor.
  • Installs and renovates turf, trees, beds, and hardscape per designs.
  • Operates trucks, tractors, sweepers, riding mowers and power tools safely.
  • Uses PPE at all times.
  • Supports Facilities Management with tasks like painting and moving furniture.
  • Performs other related tasks to complete department projects on time.

GROUNDSKEEPER QUALIFICATIONS (6508)
  • Minimum High School diploma or equivalent. Required.
  • Ability to read, write and understand instructions. Required.
  • Current valid Connecticut Drivers License. Required.
  • One to three years landscaping experience. Preferred.
  • Familiar with small engine operation and repair. Preferred.
  • Possess good mechanical aptitude. Ability to work extended hours at times.
JOB SUMMARY

Provides year-round landscape construction, installation, maintenance, and renovation activities as required to all corporate owned or leased properties using various types of grounds care equipment, tools and supplies providing for safe and pleasant surroundings for patients, staff, visitors and the community. Ensures the property is safe and accessible and related equipment is maintained in harmony with accepted industry practices and standards. Requires diverse use of grounds care related tools, equipment, and materials and basic knowledge of engine mechanics and operation.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
  • Up to 8 hours of continuous standing/walking.
  • Frequent lifting, carrying, pushing and pulling up to 50 pounds.
  • Frequent bending, reaching, squatting, kneeling, climbing, twisting and reaching above the shoulders.

COGNITIVE DEMANDS

Problem solving. Task allows for the application of previously acquired knowledge. Task requires flexibility of thought, reasoning, organizational skills and the ability to act in some new or unfamiliar situations. Selective attention and concentration are necessary to complete task. Written expression. Basic formulation, content, syntax and spelling are adequate to complete the task. Only simple sentence of very short paragraph expression is necessary. Verbal expression. Task allows for limited verbal communication. Use of automatic words, jargon and phrases in context are adequate for intelligibility and understanding. Reading/Auditory comprehension. Task allows for compliance of lengthy and complex messages or paragraphs and ability to follow multistage and three step commands. Computation. Task requires ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide all units of measure including decimal fractions. Compute ratio, rate, and percent. Draw and interpret bar graphs. Perform basic arithmetic operations involving American monetary units.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Performs routine landscape maintenance activities (I.E.: trash pickup, lawn mowing, trimming, edging, blowing, leaf cleanup, mulching, etc.) using the proper equipment for the task being performed.

Performs snow removal activities (shoveling, plowing, and application of treatments) using appropriate equipment and products to effectively manage snow, ice and slippery conditions.

Requires on-call availability during the winter months.

Performs basic equipment maintenance checks and inspects equipment for defects and problems.

Reports equipment failures/problems to supervisor in a timely manner so as to maintain safe and proper operation of equipment and minimize equipment downtime.

Installs, maintains and renovates turf, trees, planting beds and hardscape features in accord with approved designs and layouts or at the direction of the Corporate Groundskeeper.

Safely and properly operates trucks, tractors, sweeper or riding mowers and portable power tools and other equipment by obeying applicable traffic laws and by following manufacturer’s recommended operating guidelines.

Uses proper PPE at all times.

Ensures that grounds maintenance equipment is kept in safe and optimal working order by performing routine and preventative maintenance and cleaning of hand held tools and gasoline or diesel powered equipment and machines within reasonable capabilities.

Provides support to the Facilities Management Department with various tasks and projects (I.E.: painting, cleaning mechanical rooms and equipment, moving furniture or supplies).

Performs any other related tasks, activities and responsibilities as assigned or requested for the purpose of completing department projects and maintenance duties within established timeframes and in a safe efficient manner.
