Job summary

Waubonsee Community College is seeking a Groundskeeper to maintain and enhance the grounds across all campus locations. The role reports to the Grounds Supervisor and the Director of Buildings, Grounds and Events.

The job is full-time, with a 7:00am–3:30pm schedule and 40 hours per week. The ideal candidate will have a High School Diploma or equivalent and at least two years of groundskeeping experience, plus experience operating commercial grounds equipment.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Two years of related groundskeeping experience.
  • Experience operating commercial grounds equipment.
  • Valid Illinois Driver’s License.
  • Willingness to obtain Illinois Pesticide Applicator’s License and CDL Class B.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains appearance of existing grounds and plans for landscaping improvements.
  • Cares for all plant life on campus to maintain health and appearance.
  • Participates in snow removal and coordinates with Grounds Supervisor.
  • Designs and supervises care of decorative plantings and landscape beds.
  • Diagnoses problems with landscape areas and recommends fixes.
  • Assists with coordination of contractors on grounds projects.
  • Operates large power mowers, edgers, hand tools and campus vehicles.
  • Maintains and repairs Buildings and Grounds equipment.
  • Assists with events setup and removal of exterior signage and crowd control.
  • Assists with controlled burns.

TheGroundskeeper’s basic function is to enhance and maintain plant life and theoverall grounds of all Waubonsee Community College campuses. This position reports directly to the GroundsSupervisor and the Director of Buildings, Grounds and Events.

Responsibilities
  • Maintains appearance of existing grounds and develops plans for additional landscape or natural areas in order to enhance the visual appearance of the college campuses.
  • Will maintain care of all plant life on campus, in order to maintain overall appearance and health of all Waubonsee Community College campuses’ plant life.
  • Works as a participant in the snow removal plan. Coordinate with the Grounds Supervisor and perform specialized treatments and applications on all outdoor surfaces.
  • Coordinate, design and supervise the care of decorative plantings and landscape beds.
  • Diagnose problems with landscape areas, grounds equipment and recommend corrective measures.
  • Assist with the coordination of contractors on grounds projects.
  • Operate large power mowers, edgers, hand tools, and college vehicles associated with grounds maintenance and improvements.
  • Perform maintenance and repair on all Buildings and Grounds equipment.
  • Assist with special events for set ups and removal of exterior signage, cones and crowd control.
  • Assist with controlled burns.
  • Perform additional duties as may be assigned by the Grounds Supervisor and Director of Buildings, Grounds and Events
Minimum Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Two years of related experience in groundskeeping, landscaping, horticulture, turf management, or a related outdoor maintenance field
  • Experience operating commercial grounds equipment
  • Valid Illinois Driver’s License
  • Possess or be willing to obtain:
    • Illinois Pesticide Applicator’s License
    • CDL Class B License
Preferred Requirements
  • Associate degree in Horticulture, Turf Management, Landscape Management, Plant Science,
  • Natural Resources, or related field
  • CDL Class B License with airbrake endorsement
  • Commercial snow removal experience
  • Two years of training in a horticulture or landscaping program
  • Previous experience in an educational environment
Environmental Conditions and Physical Demands
  • Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions and terrain types.
  • Ability to do heavy manual labor and lift in excess of 80 lbs.
  • Ability to sit, stand, walk, climb ladders, lift and stoop for prolonged periods of time.
