Job summary

Vassar College is seeking a Grounds Maintenance Attendant to maintain campus landscaping, grounds, athletic fields, and snow/ice removal, ensuring a safe and attractive environment. The role reports to the Grounds Manager and is essential to campus operations.

Schedule is Monday–Friday, 7:00am–3:30pm (40 hours/week). The position involves operating landscape equipment, seasonal tasks, and overtime as needed, with a strong emphasis on reliability and safety.

Qualifications

• Three (3) years of experience in the maintenance and care of grounds.
• Knowledge of landscaped surfaces maintenance and care.
• Knowledge of or ability to learn irrigation systems programming and operations.
• Must possess and maintain a valid Driver’s License.
• Ability to communicate effectively in English, including speaking, reading and writing.
• Willingness to work overtime as available; overtime per seniority guidelines.
• Ability to lift 50 lbs and stand for extended periods.

Responsibilities

• Maintain campus lawns.
• Remove snow/ice from walks, drives, and parking lots.
• Maintain athletic fields (natural and synthetic) including mowing and fertilizing.
• Control weed growth manually or with licensed pesticides.
• Maintain campus trees, shrubs, and planting beds.
• Operate landscape irrigation systems under supervision.
• Perform parking lot and road repairs.
• Utilize grounds equipment (mowers, rototillers, snow plow, etc.).
• Collect trash from exterior receptacles; perform litter collection.
• Respond to after-hours snow/ice removal calls.
• Support seasonal tasks related to grounds maintenance.
