Under supervision performs a variety of semi-skilled and skilled tasks in general grounds, landscaping, and gardening functions in the maintenance of City grounds, facilities, parks, and park buildings. Exercises no supervision.

Distinguishing Characteristics :

Grounds Maintenance Worker I

This is the entry level in the class series. Positions at this level usually perform most of the duties required of the positions at the II level, but are not expected to function at the same skill level and usually exercise less independent discretion and judgment in matters related to work procedures and methods. Work is usually supervised while in progress and fits an established structure or pattern. Exceptions or changes in procedures are explained in detail as they arise. Since this class is often used as a training class, employees may have only limited or no directly related work experience. Exercises no supervision.

Grounds Maintenance Worker II :

This is the full journey level in the class series. Positions at this level are distinguished from the I level by the performance of the full range of duties as assigned, working independently and exercising judgment and initiative. Positions at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit. Positions in this class series are flexibly staffed and positions at the II level are normally filled by advancement from the I level requiring three years of experience, successful performance, management recommendation, and budget availability. When filled from the outside, the employee is required to have prior related experience which allows the employee to meet the qualification standards for the II level.

Examples of Duties

Examples of duties may include, but are not limited to, the following :

  • Performs various grounds maintenance functions; mows, trims, edges, fertilizes and waters lawns, medians, and other City easement areas; weed, prune, mulch, feed, fertilize, and irrigate plants, shrubs, trees, and groundcover;
  • Prepares soil for planting; transplant seedings, shrubs, and trees as necessary;
  • Operates a variety of hand and power tools, such as power mowers, edgers, sprayers, and other maintenance tools;
  • Assists in the preparation and application of fertilizers, insecticides, and herbicides;
  • Inspects assigned areas; corrects or reports safety hazards to supervisor;
  • Performs janitorial maintenance of parks and other facilities including removing debris trash;
  • Monitors proper schedules of automatic sprinkler systems including adjusting clocks as necessary;
  • Assists in moving and installing park and recreational equipment; and
  • Performs related duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications

Grounds Maintenance Worker I

  • Some grounds maintenance experience is desirable.

Grounds Maintenance Worker II

  • Three years of grounds and turf maintenance experience.

Education :

Grounds Maintenance Worker I / II

  • Equivalent to a high school diploma.

Licenses and Certificates :

  • Possession of a valid appropriate driver's license. Possession of a California license is required at time of appointment.

Special Requirements :

Essential functions and duties require the following physical abilities and work environment :

  • Regularly required to stand, walk, kneel, crouch, stoop, squat, twist, climb, use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear and lift up to 60 pounds;
  • Regularly exposed to outdoors, heat, noise, vibration, chemicals, mechanical hazards, and electrical hazards;
  • Regularly travel to different sites and locations; and
  • Must be able to communicate with others and to exchange information accurately.
