Job summary

Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community seeks a Grounds Maintenance worker to perform skilled and semi-skilled landscape duties, including mowing, irrigation, and upkeep of public and government areas.

This on-call, non-exempt role requires operating a range of grounds equipment, lifting up to 50 pounds, and maintaining safe work practices. A valid Arizona driver’s license and pre-employment checks are required.

Qualifications

• At least 1 year of full-time grounds maintenance experience.
• Valid Arizona Driver’s License.

Responsibilities

• Mow grass, trim shrubs and trees, prepare flower beds, plant flowers, apply fertilizers and pesticides, remove weeds and debris, maintain watering schedules.
• Install and maintain irrigation systems and drip lines; inspect, repair, and replace irrigation components to ensure adequate watering.
• Keep grounds free from trash and debris; empty outdoor trash cans; clean and remove weeds from hardscape areas.
• Inspect and maintain tables, benches, fencing; repair or log work orders for damaged items.
• Transport tools, materials, and supplies to job sites as needed.
• Perform other duties to support departmental operations.

Job description

Definition:

Under general supervision from a Grounds Maintenance Supervisor, performs a variety of skilled and semi-skilled work associated with maintaining the public use and government areas in the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community. This job class is treated as FLSA non-exempt and is subject to working on-call and weekend hours.

Essential Functions:

(Essential functions may vary among positions, but may include the following tasks, knowledge, abilities, skills, and other characteristics. This list of tasks is ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY and is not intended to be a comprehensive listing of tasks performed by all positions in this classification.)

1. Performs a variety of landscape maintenance work, including mowing grass, trimming shrubs and trees, preparing flower beds for planting and planting flowers, applying fertilizers, herbicides, and pesticides, removing weeds, debris, and dead plants, and ensuring watering schedule is maintained.
2. Installs and maintains irrigation systems and drip lines for campus grounds and athletic fields. Inspects, repairs, and replaces items associated with the irrigation system on a regular basis to ensure ample water is supplied to all grass and plants.
3. Ensures assigned grounds are kept free from trash and debris and trash cans outside of the buildings are emptied on a regular basis. Cleans and removes weeds and debris from all hardscape areas including sidewalks, gathering areas, parking lots, etc.
4. Performs regular inspections on tables, benches, fencing, etc. Cleans, repairs, or enters work orders for damaged items as required.
5. Transports tools, materials, supplies, and other items to job sites as needed.
6. Performs other job-related duties as assigned to maintain and enhance departmental operations.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Other Characteristics:

• Knowledge of general grounds maintenance principals, practices, and techniques, including equipment use and maintenance.
• Knowledge of the Community’s approved plant palette.
• Knowledge of fertilizers, herbicides, pesticides, and other chemicals used in grounds maintenance, including the hazards and safety precautions associated with their use.
• Knowledge of irrigation systems and controls (pumps, piping, heads, computer controls, timers, etc.).

• Skill in operating a variety of tools and equipment used in grounds keeping work, including backhoes, sprayers, and mowers.
• Skill in following oral and written instructions.
• Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with other staff and the public.
• Skill in operating a motor vehicle

• Ability to move objects weighing at least 50 pounds.
• Ability to walk, stoop, climb, and bend on a regular basis.
• Ability to work outside with exposure to extreme weather conditions.
• Ability to troubleshoot equipment problems.

Experience:

At least one (1) year full time grounds maintenance experience.

Equivalency

Any equivalent combination of experience and education that will allow the applicant to satisfactorily perform the duties of the job will be considered when filling the position.

An enrolled Community Member who closely qualifies for the minimum qualifications for a position may be considered for employment under SRPMIC Policy 2-19, Underfill.

Special Requirements:

Must possess and maintain a valid Arizona Driver’s License.
