Job description

Grounds Maintenance Team Member, Second Shift

Join to apply for the Grounds Maintenance Team Member, Second Shift role at Columbus Zoo and Aquarium.

Position starts at $15 an hour.

Responsibilities:
  1. Maintain Zoo grounds (e.g., litter removal, cleaning tables, benches, restrooms, walkways).
  2. Hang and take down light strands for nighttime events (e.g., Wildlights, Zoofari).
  3. Assist with maintenance projects (painting, fence and bench repair, snow shoveling, general repairs).
  4. Set up and take down tables, chairs, tents for events; perform administrative duties.
  5. Support all special events (e.g., Zoofari, Jazzoo).
  6. Maintain shop area and equipment (washing, routine maintenance).
  7. Ensure safety for self, staff, visitors, animals, equipment, and vehicles through proper safety practices.
  8. Interact with guests (answer questions, give directions).
  9. Implement sustainable practices whenever possible.
  10. Perform other duties as assigned.
Additional Information:
  • Schedule may change based on weather, guest attendance, and department needs.
  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Maintenance experience preferred.
  • Valid driver’s license with a good driving record required.
  • Ability to climb ladders and work in high or enclosed spaces.
  • Ability to operate motorized equipment.
  • Capable of performing heavy physical work for extended periods.
  • Ability to handle multiple assignments successfully.
  • Work in varied weather conditions (extreme heat, rain).
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Positive attitude, excellent guest service, courteous behavior.
  • Maintain appropriate uniform appearance as per employee handbook.
  • Availability on weekends and holidays is mandatory.
  • Subject to background checks, drug testing, and other employment policies.
