Join Our Team! Valencia College is now hiring a Full-Time Grounds Maintenance Supervisor to support our Grounds Maintenance team at the East Campus.

As a Grounds Maintenance Supervisor, you'll report directly to the Director of Grounds and will be responsible for overseeing campus landscape and hardscape maintenance through a combination of in-house staff and contracted services. This role also supervises fleet maintenance operations performed by on-site mechanics, ensuring the efficient maintenance and operation of college vehicles and equipment. Your work has a direct impact on the daily experience of students, faculty, staff, and visitors, ensuring our campuses remain welcoming, functional, and visually appealing year-round.

In this role, you will be able to:

  • Lead and supervise the daily operations of the Grounds Department, providing direction, scheduling work assignments, and ensuring high-quality service delivery by groundskeepers, mechanics, technicians, and other team members.
  • Oversee campus landscape and hardscape maintenance, irrigation systems, and Integrated Pest Management (IPM) programs, ensuring compliance with safety standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Manage fleet maintenance operations by supervising on-site mechanics responsible for preventive and corrective maintenance of college vehicles and grounds equipment.
  • Coordinate with vendors, contractors, and internal stakeholders to support grounds and fleet operations, monitor project progress, and ensure work is completed efficiently and to established standards.
  • Perform the administrative responsibilities of a supervisor, including planning, budgeting, recordkeeping, inventory oversight, reporting, and the use of computer systems to manage departmental operations.
  • Foster a collaborative, customer-focused team environment by coaching staff, supporting professional development, and promoting continuous improvement across the Grounds Department.

The ideal candidate will:

  • Bring extensive experience in grounds maintenance and landscape operations including experience in a supervisory or team lead role, with expertise in Central Florida horticulture, irrigation, and maintaining large, high-visibility properties to exceptional standards.
  • Have proven leadership experience supervising and scheduling grounds maintenance teams, contractors, and multiple priorities while balancing field operations with administrative responsibilities.
  • Demonstrate a strong commitment to accountability, reliability, and professionalism by leading through example, maintaining excellent attendance, and supporting early morning operations.
  • Take pride in creating and maintaining immaculate grounds, with a keen eye for detail, a proactive approach to identifying issues, and a commitment to delivering a clean, safe, and welcoming campus environment.

About this Position

Salary Range $44,389 - $47,938 per year

Proposed Work Schedule: Monday – Thursday: 5:00 AM-2:30 PM, Friday: 5:00 AM-9:00 AM. Please note: This position will operate in a fully on-site environment.

Essential Job Functions

  • Supervises maintenance of campus grounds utilizing horticultural practices with a variety of hand held equipment. Supervises all aspects of campus irrigation and IPM programs and complies with safety and regulatory audits.
  • Supervises campus hardscape maintenance/repair including planters, sidewalks, permanent signage, patios, and streets including routine blowing, pressure washing and removal of graffiti, litter, etc. and routine policing of campus to keep both landscape and common areas free of fallen leaves, litter, debris, unapproved signs, etc.
  • Fleet Maintenance: Supervises the campus mechanics providing preventative and reactive maintenance on all campus-wide vehicles and 2-cycle equipment utilized by the in-house Grounds Teams; ensuring that proper maintenance and inventory records are kept; all services are delivered in timely and professional manner exceeding customer service expectations; all shop areas are maintained a safe, clean and professional condition. Providing professional development opportunities for mechanic staff and creating ways to integrate mechanic staff into Grounds Department meetings and interface with other College Departments.
  • Supervises/schedules work assignments of groundskeepers, mechanics, technicians and other departmental personnel to assure professional, proactive services are delivered.
  • Participates in preparing and submitting timesheets, vacation requests and absences; ensures that all chemical MSDS information is current; tracks billing and reconciles invoices against goods and services received. Further responsible for assisting and monitoring campus Grounds and Fleet budget. Administers all college policies and procedures.
  • Analyzes overall grounds/landscaping program and recommends changes and/or submit plans for improvement. Assists in designing landscapes and develops long-range plans for the campus areas. Develops seasonal, proactive maintenance program for campus grounds. Primary point person in managing and developing equipment needs for campus.
  • Tracks department P-card purchases, generates requisitions, reconciles invoices, and ensures purchase card transactions are reviewed and verified. Assists in developing annual budgets.
  • Provides on and off campus educational opportunities for assigned staff in relevant subject areas. Performs employee evaluations and employee performance development when needed. Pursues personal development opportunities and evaluates the department’s usage to the latest technology, policies, practices and equipment.
  • Prepares preventative maintenance programs for landscape, hardscape, irrigation, equipment and fleet inventories. Enforces relevant regulations. Prepares campus grounds for weather related emergencies and subsequent clean up. Has ongoing role in helping develop campus landscaping for special events and ensuring safety protocols are met.
  • Consistently maintains an image reflecting the College’s dedication to excellence.
  • Assigns tasks generated from the computerized work order system; assists outside departments with event set-up, furniture moving and other tasks and fosters positive relationships between departments.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Drivers License Requirement REQUIRED: Must possess valid Florida Driver’s License. Employee will be required to operate a college vehicle, including but not limited to on and between campuses and in the local community, in order to perform the essential job functions.

Required Minimum Education High school diploma or general education degree (GED).

Required Field of Study

Microsoft Office software and computer operated irrigation system software.

Required License/Certification Must possess a valid State of Florida Drivers’ License or ability to acquire within 60 days of hire. Chemical Applicators License from the State of Florida.

Preferred Qualifications Minimum AA degree from a college or trade school in horticulture or closely related field.

Preferred Type of Experience Minimum 7 years’ experience, with minimum 3 years’ experience scheduling/supervising a grounds maintenance team, or a combination of education and experience. Experience overseeing mechanics and Fleet/2-cycle maintenance utilizing in-house and contracted vendors.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities 1. Knowledge of Central Florida native/ornamental landscape design, installation and maintenance and the equipment needed to accomplish these tasks. 2. Ability to perform manual labor. 3. Able to oversee administrative and field activities simultaneously and provide customer and employee satisfaction. 4. Communicate effectively both orally and in writing. 5. Time management, flexibility and the ability to multi-task in a fast paced, deadline-oriented environment. 6. Computer literacy skills 7. Ability to organize Grounds Team and Contractor activities. 8. Ability to maintain positive working relationships with students, other departments and outside vendors.
