The University of Texas at Dallas is seeking a skilled Grounds Department supervisor to oversee campus greenspace, hardscape, and outdoor facilities. You will coordinate irrigation, maintenance, and events support, focusing on water conservation and safe, efficient operations.

Ideal candidates have a strong background in landscape maintenance, supervisory experience, and familiarity with North Texas flora. Regular on-site duties and driving responsibilities are required.

5 years landscape industry experience.
3 years supervisory experience.
3 years experience with North Texas plants, shrubs, trees and soils.

Responsibilities

Review designs for University landscape and irrigation projects (in-house and external).
Monitor department budget and expenditures; assist with equipment purchases and plantings.
Ensure campus water conservation and integrate it into planning.
Develop and maintain written policies, procedures and protocols for the department.
Staff the Grounds Department and ensure training/development in written documentation.
Embed safety as a daily operational priority across the organization.
Assist with the campus-wide strategic plan for landscaping, beautification and accessibility.
Maintain valid Texas Driver’s License and acceptable driving record.

Job Summary

Responsible for all aspects of the Grounds Department. This includes managing the installation, operation, enhancement, and maintenance of campus greenspace, hardscape, right of ways, and all other university outdoor facilities. Participate in special events setup/operation/teardown as requested throughout the year. Work with Parking and Transportation for parking lot maintenance and upgrades. Responsible for irrigation water use and conservation.

Minimum Education and Experience

High School Diploma.
Texas Driver’s License.
5 years of landscape industry experience.
3 years of supervisory experience
3 years of experience with North Texas plants, shrubs, trees, and soils.

Preferred Education and Experience

Bachelor’s Degree or Master’s Degree in Horticulture, Landscape Architecture, or related field
TCEQ Licensed Irrigation Technician

To the extent this position requires the holder to research, work on, or have access to critical infrastructure as defined in Section 117.001(2) of the Texas Business and Commerce Code, the ability to maintain the security or integrity of the critical infrastructure is a minimum qualification to be hired and to continue to be employed in the position.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Review designs for University landscape and irrigation projects; both in-house and those contracted with outside landscape architects.
Responsibility for monitoring department budget and expenditures. Assist with purchase of appropriate equipment, annual plantings, tree maintenance and replacement, greenhouse operations.
Ensure campus abides by a strict water conservation plan. This involves both daily water use for landscape and fountains, as well as making water conservation a high priority in strategic planning.
Develop policies, procedures, guidelines, and protocols for all aspects for the department. Create and maintain written documentation.
Responsible for all aspects for staffing the Grounds Department. Ensure training and development are part of the departmental written documentation.
Ensure safety is an integral part of daily operations for the entire organization. Include a section on safety in the departmental written documentation.
Assist with the strategic plan for the entire campus as related to landscaping, beautification, accessibility, and pedestrian comfort.
Must possess and maintain a valid Texas Driver’s License and an acceptable driver rating as established in Policy: UTS157 Section 2.5.4.
