Job description

This is maintenance work involving the care and maintenance of the City's parks, playgrounds, athletic fields and courts, and other City properties and facilities.

Schedule and Compensation
  • Schedule: 7am - 3:30pm, occasional nights and weekends required
  • Starting hourly rate: $24.5799 - $34.4682
  • Initial interviews: TBD

Essential Job Functions

The job functions listed herein are illustrative of the tasks the employee will most likely perform regularly. The employee may be asked to perform additional tasks as needs change.

  1. Performs landscaping and grounds maintenance, including turf and plant material installation, rubbish collection, storm cleanup, graffiti removal, snow plowing, custodial duties, and maintenance of athletic fields, playground equipment, and other facilities.
  2. Identifies plant, insect, and turf problems; applies treatments using pesticides, herbicides, or fertilizers.
  3. Maintains equipment and power tools used in grounds maintenance; communicates repairs or replacements needed.
  4. Assists with construction and maintenance of park structures and amenities; performs painting and janitorial work.
  5. Supports special events, recreation programs, and holiday setups.
  6. Assists Forestry crews with tree work during critical situations.
  7. Performs maintenance and repairs on tools and equipment.
  8. Inspects parks and facilities for safety, cleanliness, and damage; performs repairs and maintenance.
  9. Performs rubbish removal and recycling.
  10. Assists with hiring, training, and coordinating seasonal employees.
  11. Trains new employees.
  12. Inspects playground equipment; orders parts and maintains records.
  13. Prepares athletic fields for games, including painting, repairs, and turf maintenance.
  14. Develops turf management programs for sports complexes.
  15. Collaborates with various staff on game schedules, field conditions, and facility improvements.
  16. Assists with design, layout, and installation of sports fields.
  17. Programs irrigation systems and performs routine maintenance.
  18. Maintains fields and performs renovation work.
  19. Inspects field conditions and performs trash removal.
  20. Makes minor repairs to vehicles and structures; assists in construction.
  21. Performs custodial duties in the complex.
  22. Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent plus at least 2 years of technical training in turf or grounds management, and 1.5 years of related experience. A degree can substitute for experience as specified. Experience with heavy equipment operation is required.

Knowledge: Landscape design, plant care, pest and disease management, safety practices, use of office equipment.

Abilities: Operate grounds maintenance tools and vehicles, perform plant identification and maintenance, follow instructions, perform physical tasks, maintain records, work flexible hours, establish effective relationships.

Skills: Power tools and machinery operation, turf care, snow and ice control techniques.

Special Requirements
  • Commercial Driver's License (Endorsements B and C preferred, within 1 year).
  • Wisconsin Pesticide Applicator License (within 1 year).
  • Ability to pass exams, drug tests, CPR/AED/First Aid, and Forklift certification within specified timeframes.
Physical Demands

Work outdoors, operate equipment, lift up to 50 pounds frequently, and work in various weather conditions. Accommodations available for disabilities.
