Job summary

Ivy Tech Community College in Indianapolis – Downtown is seeking a Grounds Maintenance Custodian II to maintain restrooms, hallways, classrooms and outdoor spaces, ensuring the campus meets the college’s visual standards.

The role includes cleaning, logistics support, seasonal grounds work, and operating hand power tools and equipment. Work hours are Monday–Friday, 6:30 AM–3:00 PM, with pay between $15.00 and $17.00 per hour, full-time benefits and opportunities for growth.

Qualifications

  • Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs and handle heavy lifting as needed.
  • Safely navigate stairs, ramps, and ladders during daily tasks.
  • Valid Indiana driver’s license or ability to obtain one.
  • Physically demanding role requiring endurance and adaptability.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct general safety inspections of facilities and grounds.
  • Apply chemicals and fertilizers as needed for grounds maintenance.
  • Maintain mulch beds, plant trees and shrubs, and care for planters.
  • Operate hand power tools and larger grounds equipment.
  • Manage trash, logs, and daily reports; assist with snow removal as seasons demand.
  • Provide backup in various departments when needed.
  • Set up and clean for outdoor events.

Job Title: Grounds Maintenance Custodian II

Location: Indianapolis – Downtown

Job Type: Full-time

Classification: N‑2

Pay Range: $15.00‑$17.00/Hour

Work Hours: Monday to Friday, 6:30 AM – 3:00 PM

Reports To: Facilities Grounds Coordinator

About The Role

The Custodian is responsible for maintaining the College's visual standards by ensuring that restrooms, hallways, classrooms, and other areas are consistently clean and well‑maintained. In addition to regular cleaning duties, this position will support campus facilities by assisting with logistics and grounds maintenance as needed.

Required Skills & Competencies
  • Lifting and Carrying: Move, lift, carry, push, pull, and place objects weighing up to 50 pounds without assistance. Heavier lifting should be done with assistance.
  • Stair and Ladder Use: Move safely up and down stairs, service ramps, and/or ladders as part of the work.
  • Travel Requirements: Must be able to travel to various campus buildings using College vehicles and hold or be able to obtain an Indiana driver's license.
  • Physical Stamina: Must be detail‑oriented, thorough, and flexible to adapt to changing tasks and environments. Significant physical effort is required, including heavy lifting, bending, twisting, and working in various environmental conditions (hot and cold).
Minimum Qualifications
  • Ability to perform physically demanding tasks, including working on ladders, lifting over 50 lbs repetitively, twisting, bending, and working in varying environmental conditions.
  • Competence in following both oral and written instructions.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working in an academic or state organization.
  • Industry‑related training or certifications relevant to custodial work.
Major Responsibilities
  • Conduct general safety inspections of facilities and grounds.
  • Apply chemicals and fertilizers, including herbicides and pesticides.
  • Maintain and prep mulch beds across campus, including weeding and replacement.
  • Plant and care for trees and shrubs, installing plants within open beds and planters.
  • Operate and maintain hand power tools and larger grounds equipment.
  • Maintain existing public open spaces, monitoring trash cans and collecting trash.
  • Maintain daily report records and work orders, including gas receipts and work logs.
  • Perform seasonal work such as snow removal, aeration, and weeding throughout all seasons and weather conditions.
  • Provide backup in various department areas (mail, copy, shipping, custodial, events) when needed.
  • Set up and clean up for periodic outdoor events.
  • Assist with loading and unloading of trucks and grounds deliveries.
Education & Experience
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • A valid driver’s license and insurance coverage as required by the College’s insurance carrier.
