Job description

General Description

The Grounds Maintenance Coordinator is a lead position performing and supervising skilled and semi-skilled work under limited supervision. Performs general maintenance and ground operations in parks, athletic fields, facilities, and buildings. The schedule for this full-time position is Monday through Friday, 6:00 AM to 3:00 PM. It is required to participate in a rotating on-call schedule for after-hours emergencies.

Essential Functions
  • Supervises, plans, and coordinates work of assigned staff. Reviews and evaluates employee performance and completes performance evaluations. Counsels staff and initiates commendations or disciplinary action when appropriate.
  • Leads, assists, and helps to supervise the grounds maintenance activities assigned to park operations, maintenance staff and other workers. Provides guidance, advice, and problem-solving assistance to effectively manage daily challenges and concerns.
  • Assists with training and instructing staff regarding all aspects of operations and maintenance, including safety practices and operational procedures.
  • Inspect all work completed by staff and contracted services to ensure high standards are met.
  • Performs weekly irrigation inspections and active sports field inspections.
  • Assists in coordinating materials, supplies, equipment, and personnel to ensure completion of operational and maintenance assignments.
  • Makes general operating decisions and determines how to use equipment and staff in the absence of his/her supervisor.
  • Maintain schedules, inventory and work assignments using an electronic work order system.
  • Assists with public relations activities.
  • Prepares and maintains records and reports, providing timely updates to supervision and administration through verbal and written communication
  • Drives and/or operates a county vehicle or equipment to complete tasks efficiently and must obey all safety policies, and roadway rules and laws.
  • Operates, maintains, and services various medium equipment’s to maintain roadways, right of ways, drainage, and other areas as needed.
  • Operates medium equipment including, but not limited to, front loader, small bulldozers, back hoes, rollers, gang mowers, bush hogs, boom axe, slope mower, box tractor, and other medium equipment and machines.
  • Performs other duties as required.
Minimum Requirements
Education, Training, and Experience
  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Five (5) years’ working experience with computers, required.
  • At least four (4) years’ experience in turf industry and grounds maintenance, required.
  • Prior supervisory experience preferred.
Licenses and Certifications
  • Valid Florida Driver License or must obtain within 30 days of establishing residency in Florida.
  • Must have or be able to obtain within six (6) months of employment, Florida Commercial Driver License (CDL) Class “A”.
  • Must have or be able to obtain within six (6) months of employment, Playground Safety Inspector certification.
  • Must have or be able to obtain within six (6) months of employment, Florida Applicator License (Ornamental and Turf).
  • Must have or be able to obtain within 90 days certification in FEMA National Incident Management System (NIMS) courses:
    • IS-100.c: Introduction to the Incident Command System (ICS)
    • IS-200.b: ICs for Single Resources & Initial Action Incidents
    • IS-700.b: An Introduction to the National Incident Management System
    • IS-800.c: National Response Framework, an Introduction
Skills And Abilities
  • Must be able to complete courses in turf grass maintenance or grounds maintenance once hired.
  • Must have sufficient physical strength, agility, and stamina to perform assigned tasks under adverse conditions.
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of operating various types of light to medium equipment.
  • Ability to use effectively standard maintenance equipment, medium construction equipment, and hand tools.
  • Ability to work after normal business hours, including nights, weekends, and on-call duties.
  • Ability to effectively communicate (verbally and in writing) in a clear, confident manner using proper grammar.
  • Requires ability to maintain courteous and effective relations with County staff, elected officials, community interest groups and the public.
  • Must have strong working knowledge of computers and be proficient in the use of Microsoft Office Suite of Products (i.e., Outlook, Word, Excel, etc.)
Physical Requirements/Work Environment
  • Requires a combination of sitting, standing, and walking.
  • The job involves frequent lifting and carrying up to 10 pounds, and occasionally up to 50 pounds.
  • The job requires frequent bending, squatting, kneeling, balancing, twisting, and reaching above shoulders, and occasional climbing and throwing.
  • The job requires the completion of tasks that involve simple grasping, pushing, pulling, fine manual manipulation, typing, operating foot controls/levers, driving automotive equipment, working in darkness, and operating a manual transmission.
  • The job requires normal visual acuity and field of vision, depth perception and color vision, hearing, and speaking.
  • The job may risk exposure to adverse weather, moving machinery, fumes and gases, electrical hazards, unprotected heights, and extreme noise.

Emergency Response/Recovery Activities
  • All employees will be required to work before, during, or after an emergency. During an emergency, employees may temporarily be assigned to work and perform duties outside the normal scope of their position, location, and work schedule to fit the needs of the County and its citizens. Emergency response duties may also include driving and/or operating a county vehicle or equipment and employees must obey all safety policies, and roadway rules and laws.

  • Wellness Incentive: New Hires will have the option of submitting to a nicotine test during the pre-employment physical. Those that are nicotine free will receive a $50 wellness incentive monthly applied towards their health premium costs.
