Job summary

Wa-Nee Community Schools seeks a Maintenance/Grounds Tech to support safe, functional, and aesthetically pleasing school facilities. The role includes maintenance, repair of buildings and grounds, and coordination of routine services and grounds care.

The position requires knowledge of plumbing, electrical, HVAC, and machinery, with flexibility for after-hours calls and field duties. Indiana pesticide license is required or obtainable, and a background check will be conducted.

Responsibilities

  • Under supervision, perform maintenance and repair work relating to operation and maintenance of buildings, structures, and grounds.
  • Install, repair, and maintain wiring, plumbing and mechanical systems as needed.
  • Inspect drives, motors, belts, and replace filters; diagnose mechanical problems and correct them.
  • Order parts and supplies; plan repair work using diagrams, blueprints, or manuals.
  • Provide grounds keeping services, such as landscaping and snow/ice removal.

Position Title: Maintenance/Grounds Tech
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
Responsible to: Director of Buildings and Grounds
Supervises: none
Evaluated by: Director of Buildings and Grounds
Terms of Employment: 12-month
Evaluation Period:
  • Formative evaluations throughout the school year as per WCS Performance and Assessment Procedures.
  • Annual summative evaluation prior to July 1.
Purpose of the Position:
  • To provide students, faculty, and staff with a physical learning environment that is safe, functional, comfortable, and aesthetically attractive.
  • To keep Sports Fields and Ground at high Standard of cleanliness and playability
Minimum Requirements:
  • Must be team oriented and able to effectively deal with people.
  • Must have good communication skills.
  • Must be willing to work various shifts or be called out after hours.
  • Must be willing to operate heavy machinery if needed.
  • Demonstrate working knowledge of the fundamentals of Plumbing, Electrical, HVAC and Machinery.
  • Candidates are subject to criminal background checks as well as periodic checks of their driver’s license.
  • Must hold an Indiana Pesticide License. Or willing to get. Core and 3B
Essential Functions of the Position:

The following functions have been determined by Wa-Nee Community Schools to be essential to the successful performance of this position.

Under the supervision of the Director of Buildings and Ground performs a variety of maintenance and repair work relating to the operation and maintenance of buildings, structures, and Grounds.Performs administrative work pertaining to the maintenance program and is expected to exercise good judgment in completing work assignments

  • Have knowledge of the Maintenance requirements of Field Turf. Or willing to learn.
  • Implement a fertilizer and herbicide program with records to meet pesticide standards, and over see water needs of sports fields.
  • The ability to work alone most of the time. But be able to work with others in harmony.
  • Paint Sports fields as needed.
Primary Functions of the Position:
  • Use tools ranging from common hand and power tools, such as hammers, hoists, saws, drills, and wrenches, to precision measuring instruments and electrical and electronic testing devices.
  • Cleaning and upkeep of assign areas. Primarily adjacent to Sports Complexes.
  • Perform routine preventive maintenance to ensure that machines continue to run smoothly, building systems operate efficiently, or the physical condition of the numerous buildings does not deteriorate.
  • Order parts, supplies, and equipment from catalogs and suppliers, or obtain them from storerooms.
  • Assemble, install, or repair wiring, electrical or electronic components, pipe systems, plumbing, machinery, or equipment.
  • Inspect drives, motors, and belts, check fluid levels, replace filters, or perform other maintenance actions, following checklists.
  • Repair or replace defective equipment parts, using hand tools and power tools, and reassemble equipment.
  • Clean or lubricate shafts, bearings, gears, or other parts of machinery.
  • Inspect, operate, or test machinery or equipment to diagnose machine malfunctions.li>
  • Dismantle devices to access and remove defective parts, using hoists, cranes, hand tools, and power tools.
  • Plan and lay out repair work, using diagrams, drawings, blueprints, maintenance manuals, or schematic diagrams.
  • Perform general cleaning of buildings or properties when necessary.
  • Diagnose mechanical problems and determine how to correct them, checking blueprints, repair manuals, or parts catalogs, as necessary.
  • Provide grounds keeping services, such as landscaping and snow and ice removal from drives and sidewalks as needed.
  • Deliver supplies to each building in the district on occasion.
  • Attend to emergencies when necessary.
  • Support and enforce all school policies and governmental regulations such as OSHA/IOSHA rules, school health and safety regulations and guidelines, etc.
  • Operate any and all grounds keeping equipment.
  • Repair and maintain equipment to existing corporation standards
  • Monitor inventory of supplies for routine maintenance and inform the Director of Building and Grounds.
  • Troubleshoot problems involving equipment or field conditions.
  • Assist in the upkeep of the corporation storage building.
  • Assist head custodians with special projects.
  • Support and enforce policies established by the Director of Building and Grounds.
Secondary Functions of the Position:
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as needed or as directed by the Director of Buildings and Grounds and Superintendent.
Knowledge of:
  • Policies, procedures and functions of Wa-Nee Community Schools Board of Trustees and the Indiana Department of Education
  • The use of Computers and Applicable software and applications
Ability to:
  • Plan, organize, and schedule priorities.
  • Use independent judgment and initiative in making sound decisions and in developing solutions to problems. Then complete them in a timely manner.
  • Make independent decisions in accordance with established policies and procedures.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, and the community.

  • Mechanical tools and equipment.

Physical Demands:
  • Must be able to sit and/or stand for long periods of time.
  • Must be able to stoop, kneel or crouch.
  • Must be able to hear and speak clearly.
  • Must be able to lift items of 50 lbs. regularly/100 lbs. occasionally.
