Position / Title: Grounds Laborer – Grade 2 (Tuesday – Saturday)

Function / Position Summary
The primary purpose of this position is to assist in the daily operations of the grounds department. Perform all aspects of landscape maintenance and provide the students with a functional, safe, and attractive environment in which to learn.

Job Duties / Responsibilities

• Ability to be in charge of a zone of schools and perform groundskeeping services including, but not limited to mowing, edging, trimming, weed control, fertilization, pruning and regular trash pick-up within the area of assignment.
• Conducts preventative maintenance checks (oil, filters, belts, tire pressure, etc.).
• Assist other department personnel in the completion of work activities as assigned.
• Maintain a status of “On Call” for snow and ice management as well as Grounds emergencies. When contacted, be able to assess the needs of the district and complete the work necessary to get schools opened on time.
• Receive and process incoming work orders in a timely fashion via the work order management system.
• Act as a lead for fall and spring sporting events that take place in district stadiums, often moving shifts to cover events.
• Ability to work independently with tasks, or as a part of a larger group.
• Fill in for day and night custodians as required.
• Other duties as assigned.

Education

• High School Diploma or equivalent required.
• Current Illinois Pesticide Operator's license or ability to acquire within twelve months of employment.

Experience / Knowledge

• Ability to operate Grounds equipment within safety guidelines.
• Landscape experience (1-3 years) preferred.
• Grounds equipment and routine maintenance experience preferred.
• Snow and ice removal experience preferred.

Physical Demands

• Able to lift 50 pounds with proper technique.
• Work safely from a stepladder, aerial lifts or scaffolding up to a height of 10 feet.
• Work primarily outdoors involving exposure to inclement weather.

Terms of Employment

• This is a twelve (12) month position.
• Days and hours will vary depending on departmental needs.
• Salary and benefits as established by the Board of Education.
• Flexible hours/OT may be necessary.
