Job summary

Virginia Department of Veterans Services is seeking a Grounds Worker to perform maintenance on the Davis & McDaniel Vet Care Center property. The role includes snow and ice removal, lawn care, pest inspection and plant care, and minor repairs to facilities and equipment.

The position requires two years of general maintenance/grounds keeping experience and includes essential personnel duties. Salary range $16.00–$20.00 per hour with state pay band 1.

Qualifications

• Two years experience in general maintenance/grounds keeping.
• Criminal background check and pre-employment drug screening required; TB tests required.

Responsibilities

• Maintain appearance of driveway and DMVCC property.
• Assist in removal of snow and ice from walks, driveways and entrances by shoveling, salting, use of chemicals, snow blower and plow.
• Inspect lawn, flowers, shrubs and trees for evidence of pests and take appropriate control measures.
• Plant seeds and bulbs, tree seeding and shrubbery; weed and thin flowerbeds; prune trees and trim hedges.
• Dig up and store bulbs or mulch beds for protection and appearance.
• Connect sprinkling equipment and water lawns and shrubbery.
• Use all lawn equipment and perform routine equipment maintenance and minor repairs.
• Drywall patch/repair and room painting; install bulletin boards, light bulbs, cords, seals and shades.
• Clean air-handling rooms and other shop areas; assist in repairs of minor malfunctions.
• May be required to assist agency or state government in emergencies.
