Job Summary:

Maintains grounds at assigned areas (namely Shangri La Botanical Gardens & Nature Center, including all areas inside and outside of perimeter fence, whether developed or undeveloped and including the offsite visitor parking lot adjacent to the main garden).

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Primarily responsible for executing the comprehensive turf maintenance program including mowing, trimming, edging, and blowing as well as seasonal renovation and repair.
  • Monitors and controls weed and pest populations in lawn areas via integrated pest management best practices.
  • Performs all levels of landscape and grounds maintenance required to maintain the highest aesthetic standards throughout the property and support seasonal display rotations. Primarily responsible for the full scope of garden maintenance within a clearly identified zone.
  • Transports tools, equipment, and supplies necessary to support work assignments, operating vehicles in a safe manner.
  • Assists in the care and maintenance of all outdoor equipment used in the Department including implementing routine maintenance schedules. Maintains standards for the daily care and storage of garden equipment and notifies supervisor of any supply needs.
  • Ensures litter and debris removal from work areas.
  • Supports and provides general gardening functions as needed.
  • Performs other tasks as directed by supervisor.

Note: Despite current assignment(s) for performance of duties, Grounds Crew Members may be assigned from time to time and at any time to any Foundation property, venue or operation, including Downtown Properties or Service Center, as directed by a supervisor.

  • Provide courteous, professional, timely and accurate service and support to all visitors, volunteers, and co-workers

  • Follow safe work procedures, report potentially unsafe conditions, notify supervisor of damages, defects, or the need for repairs that could prevent deterioration of equipment or possible injury to employees or others
  • Exercise care, perform required maintenance, and follow all operating instructions, safety standards, and guidelines when operating equipment or vehicles
  • Observe scheduled work hours
  • Properly store all supplies and materials

Experience:

Six months experience in lawn maintenance preferred

Ability to work with diverse groups of individuals. Must be a team player able to work comfortably and effectively in cross-functional teams.

  • Ability to operate mowers, heavy equipment and other tools necessary to do job
  • Be organized and a results oriented individual
  • Valid Driver’s License and good driving record
  • Ability to speak, read, and understand English as it relates to the duties and safety requirements of the position
  • Ability to add/subtract two digit numbers and to multiple/ divide with 10s and 100s

Physical Demands:

Job involves the regular, and at times sustained, performance of heavier physical tasks. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to handle and use objects, tools, equipment and control devices. The employee will be frequently standing, walking, stooping, sitting, reaching for objects, walking over rough or uneven surfaces and using a ladder. The ability to see, with or without corrective measures, and to adjust focus, see in color, and see objects a reasonable distance is essential. Employee may be required to move, push, pull or lift objects ranging from 10-80 pounds.

Work Environment:

The employee will work outside most of the time. These areas are commonly wet, humid, hot or cold. Noise levels are generally moderate. However, the use of certain equipment may require the use of hearing protection. Environment includes blooming plants, plant saps, fertilizers and other possible allergens.

Tasks may require exposure to insects, snakes and/or rodents according to prevailing habitat conditions.
