Job summary

HCA Healthcare is seeking a Grossing Technician in Fort Lauderdale to support tissue processing in the gross room and Frozen Section Services, under supervision of pathology leadership, contributing to timely and accurate specimen workups. The role requires 1 year of histology or grossing experience, an accredited associate degree in laboratory science or equivalent, and ASCP certification is preferred.

You will document findings, maintain clean workspaces, and assist in education of residents

Qualifications

  • 1 year of histology and/or grossing experience required.
  • Certification by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) preferred.
  • Education/training equivalent to an associate degree in laboratory science.

Responsibilities

  • Performs gross examinations, dissection and description of tissues.
  • Workload prioritized to meet Turn-Around-Time and specimen requirements.
  • Maintain competence and update skills as procedures evolve.
  • Tissue sampling, gross descriptions and dictations accurate per procedure.
  • Specimens photographed when appropriate for archival purposes.
  • Performs and dictates gross procedures on routine and complex specimens.
  • Keeps gross room and equipment clean and properly organized.

Job Summary And Qualifications
GENERAL SUMMARY OF DUTIES:

The employee is responsible for daily activities associated with the processing of tissues as received from surgical procedures; participation in the education of pathology residents in tissue processing and participation in the quality assurance activities that are associated with these processes. The incumbent will serve as a Grossing Technician in the Gross Room and Frozen Section Services area under the supervision of the Pathologists' Assistant Lead or Medical Director of Pathology Services. SUPERVISOR: Division Director of Physician Services/Operations, Pathology Services

DUTIES INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:
  • Performs gross examinations, dissection and description of tissues.
  • Workload is prioritized and managed to meet expected Turn-Around-Time (TAT) and specific specimen requirements.
  • Competence is maintained and new skills are added as procedures and technologies change.
  • Tissue sampling, gross descriptions and dictations are accurate and according to procedure.
  • Specimens are photographed when appropriate for archival purposes.
  • Performs gross procedures and dictation on routine and complex specimens as required
  • Disposes of specimens as per guidelines and accreditation requirements
  • Performs and ensures that gross room and frozen section areas are kept clean at all times all tools maintained in assigned areas, etc.
  • Problems are resolved with appropriate consultation and communication to supervisor and medical staff.
EDUCATION:
  • Associate’s degree in laboratory science (chemical or biological) or medical laboratory technology obtained from an accredited institution or;
  • Education / training equivalent to the above that includes the following: o 60 semester hours or equivalent from an accredited institution, OR 24 semester hours of science courses that includes 6 semester hours of chemistry, 6 semester hours of biology, and 12 semester hours of chemistry, biology or medical laboratory technology in any combination, AND o Laboratory training including either completion of a clinical laboratory training program approved or accredited by the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES)
EXPERIENCE:
  • 1 year of histology and/or grossing experience required
CERTIFICATION/LICENSE:
  • Certification by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists preferred
