Overview

The employee is responsible for daily activities associated with the processing of tissues as received from surgical procedures; participation in the education of pathology residents in tissue processing and participation in the quality assurance activities that are associated with these processes. The incumbent will serve as a Grossing Technician in the Gross Room and Frozen Section Services area under the supervision of the Pathologists’ Assistant Lead or Medical Director of Pathology Services.

Responsibilities
  • Performs gross examinations, dissection, and description of tissues.
  • Manage workload to meet expected Turn-Around-Time (TAT) and specific specimen requirements.
  • Maintain competence and acquire new skills as procedures and technologies change.
  • Ensure tissue sampling, gross descriptions, and dictations are accurate and in accordance with procedures.
  • Photograph specimens when appropriate for archival purposes.
  • Perform gross procedures and dictation on routine and complex specimens as required.
  • Dispose of specimens per guidelines and accreditation requirements.
  • Maintain, repair, and troubleshoot equipment; contact company technical service representatives as required.
  • Maintain digital equipment, prepare digital photos, and assist with uploading and storage of digital files.
  • Keep gross room and frozen section areas clean at all times; maintain tools in assigned areas.
  • Keep tissue storage area/racks clean and organized for rapid retrieval; maintain storage areas per guidelines and accreditation standards.
  • Train and educate laboratory personnel and residents in the processing of surgical tissues.
  • Communicate gross room procedures clearly to staff; resolve problems with appropriate consultation and communication to supervisors and medical staff.
  • Evaluate resident performance with managerial and medical staff; apply quality, safety, and compliance programs in the Gross room.
  • Apply compliance guidelines to testing and reporting activities.
  • Handle chemicals, hazardous waste, and sharps accurately and safely.
  • Collect and summarize Quality Assurance data for reporting as needed.
  • Suggest process improvement initiatives.
  • Participate in the development, implementation, and maintenance of Surgical Pathology protocols.
  • Ensure that the procedure manual is updated annually to reflect current methodology, medical staff requests, and federal, state, and laboratory accreditation standards.
  • Use electronic information/data systems to access and input tissue sample information and departmental communications accurately.
  • Maintain accuracy and quality in all activities.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in a science-related field (major coursework in biology, chemistry, or immunology) from an accredited university, or graduate of a NAACLS-accredited Pathologists’ Assistant Training Program and an AAPA Fellow or eligible.
  • Certification by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists is preferred.
  • 1 year of histology and/or grossing experience required.
  • Experience with grossing routine specimens (gallbladder, appendix, uterus, etc.).
