Job summary

Petco is seeking a Pet Stylist to provide professional grooming services, including bathing, drying, brushing, haircuts, nail trimming, and ear cleaning. You will follow breed standards and Petco policies to ensure each pet looks and feels their best.

Responsibilities include working with grooming tools, ensuring pet safety, educating pet parents on home care, and maintaining a clean grooming space. Weekend/evening availability is required; competitive pay and growth opportunities are offered.

Qualifications

• Successful completion of Pet Stylist Apprentice program or equivalent grooming training.

• Maintain a clean and safe grooming area; disinfect and sanitize tools, perform cleaning duties per policies.
• Apply grooming policies to ensure safety, quality, and consistency.
• Assist in training and supervising entry-level trainees in the absence of a Grooming Salon Leader.

Position Overview

As a Pet Stylist at Petco, you will be responsible for providing professional grooming services to our valued customers' pets. With your expertise and attention to detail, you will ensure that each pet receives exceptional care, leaving them looking and feeling their best.

Essential Job Functions

• Under moderate to limited supervision, perform professional grooming services including bathing, drying, brushing, haircuts and styling, nail trimming, ear cleaning, and gland cleaning, following pet parent's instructions and adhering to breed standards and company policies.
• Operate and maintain grooming instruments such as clippers, blades, shears, brushes, and dryers.
• Prioritize pet well‑being and safety; monitor pets for discomfort, illness, or injury, and report concerns promptly.
• Evaluate each pet’s individual needs, considering coat type, skin conditions, and temperament.
• Interact professionally with pet parents, provide excellent customer service, address inquiries, offer recommendations, and resolve questions.
• Educate pet parents on grooming maintenance and at‑home care to promote overall pet well‑being.
• Maintain a clean and safe grooming area; disinfect and sanitize tools, perform daily and weekly cleaning duties in accordance with Petco hygiene and sanitation policies.
• Apply Petco grooming policies, standards, and guidelines to ensure safety, quality, and consistency.
• Assist in training and supervising entry‑level trainees in the absence of a Grooming Salon Leader.

Education & Experience

• Successful completion of the Pet Stylist Apprentice program with Petco or previous professional grooming experience; or completion of a technical grooming training program.
• High‑school diploma or GED preferred, though not required.
• Independent judgment and problem‑solving ability in routine to moderately complex situations, with guidance when necessary.
• Results‑driven with commitment to productivity and performance.
• Strong attention to detail and high standards of grooming execution.
• Passion for animals and desire for a career in pet grooming.
• Expert knowledge of dog breeds, grooming requirements, common health issues, and behaviors.
• Proficiency in breed‑specific cuts, styling techniques, and grooming standards.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills for interactions with pet parents and team members.
• Capable of handling pets of all sizes and temperaments with care and empathy.
• Availability to work weekends, evenings, and holidays as required by the grooming schedule.

Work Environment

The majority of duties are conducted indoors in the grooming salon. The position requires bending, kneeling, lifting (up to 30 pounds), and standing for long periods. Exposure to heights using a two‑step ladder or other support tools may be necessary for cleaning and maintenance. The work environment can be noisy and wet.

Salary Range

$15.00 – $25.00 per hour (Hourly or salary). Actual pay depends on location, experience, and applicable minimum wage laws.
