Overall Job Summary
This position is responsible for enrolling & completing the training course Level 1 provided by Petsense, “Paragon,” in preparation for a career in grooming and/or bathing.
Paragon is a virtual distant learning program where students are guided through a 15-week training program designed to educate students on the fundamentals in bathing and grooming, while also providing the necessary basic skills in safety, pet first aid and CPR, pet handling skills, dog anatomy and dog physiology. This is achieved through a combination of hands-on practice, book work, online exams, watching videos and submitting photos of practical application for grading.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Maintain regular and predictable attendance.
- Work scheduled shifts and have the ability to work varied hours, days, nights, weekends and overtime as dictated by business needs.

- Groom Technicians in Training are required to learn & perform a combination of duties throughout their training program, including:
- Successfully enroll & complete the Paragon training for Level 1 (Groom Tech) within five weeks.
- Safe Pet Handling
- Bathing, Drying, Brushing and Combing all coat types
- Nail Trimming
- Ear Cleaning
- Preparatory Hair Trimming
- Basic Clipper Techniques
- Basic Finishing Techniques
- Customer Service Skills
- Demonstrating Professionalism
- Equipment Handling and Maintenance
- Ensuring the safety and well-being of animals
- Inspecting animals for external signs of parasites, disease or injury and reporting findings to pet owners
- Practicing Safety and Sanitization protocols
- Sanitizing and maintaining grooming tools and equipment
- Generating business through customer interactions and appointment scheduling
- Maintaining records of pet clients and vaccination records
- Operating computer as needed
- Assisting in store recovery if needed
- Ensuring safety and care of live animals, including sanitizing holding tanks
- Completing documentation for all duties
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- Experience working with dogs and cats, demonstrating patience and compassion.
- Must provide own grooming tools or be willing to purchase them.
- High school diploma or equivalent required; ability to read, write, and count accurately.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills or Abilities
- Operate grooming tools and equipment effectively.
- Effective communication skills.
- Compassionate and attentive to animals.
- Attention to detail and problem-solving skills.
- Basic computer skills and interpersonal skills.
Working Conditions
- Indoor environment with moderate noise, exposure to grooming tools, pets, and waste.
- Wet conditions when bathing animals.
- Work shifts vary, generally no less than 4 hours, may exceed 8 hours.
- Adhere to safety guidelines and promote a safe environment.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to move and transfer animals and equipment up to 50 pounds.
- Stand and maintain position for up to 8 hours.
- Move around the salon to groom animals and perform cleaning tasks.
- Utilize grooming instruments effectively.
- Bend, kneel, squat frequently.
- Operate store equipment safely.
- Read, write, and communicate effectively.
