Job summary

Dominion Energy is seeking an electrical engineering-focused student for a summer internship in Distribution System Grid Planning. The role provides hands-on experience in grid studies, data analytics, modeling, and documentation within a team supporting grid modernization efforts.

You will work in a hybrid schedule, one week in the office and one week teleworking, and gain exposure to load flow, reliability analyses, and forecasting tools under guided supervision.

Qualifications

• This internship is designed for a student building a foundation in electrical engineering, power systems, data analysis, or a related technical discipline.
• Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate degree program and pursuing related coursework.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office tools is preferred; Excel, Power BI, Python, GIS experience is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Assist with distribution system studies, including load flow, voltage, reliability, and time-series analysis under guidance.
• Support data collection, validation, and organization for distribution grid load and DER forecasting.
• Help maintain planning models, spreadsheets, maps, dashboards, and documentation.
• Assist with long-range plan development by supporting research, data review, and documentation.
• Analyze infrastructure interdependencies related to thermal, voltage, and reliability criteria with guidance.
• Perform/design engineering and support activities related to traditional utility solutions and non-wires alternatives.
• Research industry practices, grid modernization strategies, and related planning topics.
• Participate in team meetings, technical discussions, and process improvement efforts.
• Develop technical communication skills through summaries, presentations, and documentation.
