Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Plan, lead, and facilitate community events (about 5% of time)
  • Manage plant production, care, inventory, and labeling; maintain planting records
  • Oversee maintenance: cleanliness, signage, stocking, and safety
  • Deliver outstanding customer service and manage cash handling and POS operations
  • Coach and train apprentices in horticulture, plant care, customer service, and POS usage
  • Coordinate daily tasks with Greenhouse Director and order supplies as needed
  • Oversee local processes and event preparations; log tasks and report defects
  • Lead all-staff activities and meetings and support ongoing horticulture training

Job description

The Greenhouse Manager will be managing plant production, inventory, and community events, while ensuring the garden center’s cleanliness and success. The job requires experience in horticulture, retail, and management, with responsibilities ranging from plant care to customer service and administrative tasks. This position will also be responsible for coaching and training apprentices in horticulture, plant care, customer service, and POS usage.

Key Roles & Responsibilities

Plan, Lead, and Facilitate Events, which includes (5%):

  • Plan, Coordinate and Facilitate community events, about 5-10 per year
  • Support/delegate tasks to apprentices or other staff during or in preparation for events

Managing Plant Production & Care (40%):

  • Create and implement specific procedures for seeding and transplanting and check for accuracy
  • Delegate watering tasks and teach watering techniques and check for accuracy
  • Manage system of organization to label inventory
    • Delegate/Check for accuracy
  • Assign, teach and execute plant maintenance and check for accuracy
  • Monitor plants for pests and diseases and assign/execute any necessary remedies for optimal plant health/success
  • Manage transplanting, care and stock of all seasonal plants
  • Keep record of planting, seeding, transplanting, spraying, fertilizing etc.

Maintenance (20%)

  • Keep the garden center clean, safe and presentable
    • clean, sweep, janitorial duties, etc.,
    • Keep walkways, collaborative spaces & customer areas clear of potential hazards such as random plant material, hose obstruction, etc,.
  • Ensure all signage is clear, faced & accurate
  • Maintain plant organization and keep things stocked
  • Ensure that all retail items are stocked, faced, priced and organized
  • Schedule, receive and stock products
    • Make note of/order items based on needs and stock availability in collaboration with the Greenhouse Director

Customer Service (20%)

  • Manage and supervise opening and closing procedures
  • Ensure that proper cash and coin quantities are on hand, and are recorded and balanced properly
  • Greet and assist customers
  • Uphold greenhouse guidelines and policies
  • Provide guidance, answer inquiries, offer recommendations, and help customers with their purchases
  • Ensure a positive shopping experience by addressing customer needs and concerns
  • Accurately convey information about Teens Grow Greens programming
  • Perform opening and closing duties
    • This includes keeping track of deposits, maintaining accurate cash count in the drawer, getting change when necessary, etc.,
  • Manage greenhouse apprentices in their customer service and other duties by assigning daily tasks, checking for accuracy

Coaching and Training Apprentices, which includes (5%):

  • Facilitate and assist trainings in technical horticultural skills such as seeding, transplanting, watering, etc.
  • Facilitate trainings in customer service and the use of POS
  • Provide any necessary, in the moment feedback for Apprentices while supervising their performance

Local Processes (10%)

  • Plan, update, and log daily tasks for the team and apprentices
  • Assist in ordering supplies, plants, tags, seeds, etc, in collaboration with the Greenhouse Director
  • Inspect shipments for defects and report defects to Greenhouse Director
  • Complete and process order fulfillment for special orders
  • Assist Coordinator with the pick up of supplies, plants, materials for operations, maintenance, or other errands
  • Complete seasonal projects or maintenance based on needs of the business
  • Expense and sales reporting – Record and balance drawer count, receipts, expenses, and revenue

All-staff Responsibilities

  • Attending Staff-wide meetings
    • Weekly staff meetings (updates, problem solving, collaboration)
    • 1 “Love Day” per month (relaxing, culture-building activities)
  • Attending Webers Team meetings
    • 1 full-team meeting per week
    • One-on-one check-in/planning meetings with Greenhouse Director
  • Attending various other meetings as needed:
    • Staff/team meetings for event or strategic planning (typically in spring and fall)
  • Continued horticulture training and education.
Must Haves
  • You have experience working in horticulture in a retail setting. (3-5 years required)
  • You have an associate’s degree or similar in horticulture
  • You have experience in management (3-5 years required)
  • You have experience with Google Suite applications (gmail, sheets, drive, etc)
  • You are experienced and comfortable working with power tools
  • You are experienced and comfortable working on a ladder
  • You can stand for long periods of time
  • You have a valid driver’s license, as part of your role may include making deliveries, picking up supplies, or working off-site.
  • You are comfortable doing physical work on a daily basis and are able to lift 35 pounds
  • Possess a willingness to work in all outdoor conditions and be exposed to various weather elements.
  • You are comfortable occasionally working on site alone.
  • Flexibility to work weekends, holidays, and varying hours depending on the seasonal demands of the garden center. This role requires regular weekend shifts.
Compensation
  • $54,000 starting salary (35-40 hours per week)
  • You are eligible to participate in the organization’s health insurance and Simple IRA plans upon signing.

  • Employment with Teens Grow Greens is at-will, allowing you or the company to end the relationship at any time, with or without cause or notice, in accordance with applicable laws.
