Calumet Specialty Products Partners L.P. in Indianapolis seeks an experienced R&D Manager to lead grease and open gear lubricant product development across industrial, automotive, mining, and specialty applications.

You will design test programs, secure OEM approvals, mentor R&D chemists, and collaborate with suppliers to deliver innovative, differentiated products. The role focuses on scaling from bench to full production, maintaining industry standards, and delivering measurable performance

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, or related field; MS/PhD preferred.
• 10 years+ in greases, OGLs or finished lubricants.
• Hands-on grease manufacturing knowledge: thickener saponification, kettle operations, milling, homogenization.
• Experience with major thickener systems (lithium, lithium complex, calcium sulfonate, polyurea, clay, aluminum complex).
• Experience using ASTM, DIN, ISO methods for lubrication testing.
• Proven leadership of technical staff and cross-functional collaboration.

Responsabilités

• Lead grease, OGL and semi-solid lubricant development across industrial, automotive, mining, and specialty applications.
• Develop greases and OGLs with measurable performance advantages.
• Secure OEM and industry approvals and NLGI certifications.
• Collaborate with suppliers and OEMs to assess base oils, thickeners, and additives.
• Design and execute test programs to benchmark performance against standards.
• Work with cross-functional teams to deliver products aligned with brand strategy.
• Evaluate raw materials and additive packages for grease and OGL formulations.
• Provide expert technical support to customers and internal teams.
• Scale-up grease and OGL formulations from bench to full-scale production with manufacturing partners.
• Maintain knowledge of industry standards (NLGI, ELGI, ASTM, ISO, DIN, STLE).
• Develop and maintain product development processes.
• Mentor and train R&D chemists and technicians.
• Other duties as required.
