Job summary

Bertha’s Place is a 62 unit, non‑congregate shelter for people experiencing homelessness. The population served is one third single women, one third couples with a female head of household, and one third people over 55. Bertha’s place is a secure access 24‑hour/7‑day a week low barrier shelter with the primary goal of helping support residents to regain permanent housing.

Shelter Staff provide supervision, program structure, behavior management and a wide range of basic needs services, as well as more advanced social services. This includes helping guests navigate a myriad of social service agencies, forms and interviews. Staff are trained in behavior management, basic case services, as well as Motivational Interviewing and other counseling skills.

Responsibilities
  • Shelter Responsibilities
    • Ensure a safe, welcoming, supportive environment for shelter guests and staff.
    • Monitor traffic at the front door and outside of the facility in the immediate area surrounding the shelter, ensuring only residents of the shelter or authorized personnel enter the building.
    • Develop supportive relationship with guests by using motivational interviewing strategies.
    • Respond to guests who are in crisis, disruptive, or having medical emergencies.
    • Provide behavioral management for a diverse population including individuals with chemical dependency and/or mental health issues.
    • Write timely, professional, and behaviorally descriptive Incident Reports or Ban Reports when incidents or disruptive behaviors occur.
    • Provide services, resources, and information to guests.
    • Work with volunteers, the volunteer coordinator, and community partners to provide food and meals for guests.
    • Help maintain health and safety of the facility as well as monitoring client rooms for health and safety concerns.
  • Security Responsibilities
    • Monitor behaviors in and around the Bertha’s Place and parking lot assuring policies and procedures are enforced.
    • Provide information and referral services to guests and homeless individuals.
    • Patrol parking lot and immediate surrounding areas to ensure the safety of guests, residents, and businesses.
    • Make contact with businesses in the patrol area to form and maintain positive community relations.
    • Coordinate with other the Bertha’s Place Shelter staff for back up to deal with challenging situations.
    • Coordinate with Bertha’s Place staff that are monitoring the security cameras.
    • Utilizes the Vancouver Police Department as needed.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Must obtain Food Handler’s card within first 3 months of employment.
  • Experience working with diverse populations including people with active mental health and chemical dependency issues is a plus.
  • Possess good verbal and written communication.
  • Applicant must successfully pass required background checks prior to an offer of employment.
  • Ability to provide a negative TB test.
  • Must have an acceptable driving record per CCS’ driving policy, (required to provide current driving abstract)
  • Must have reliable transportation, valid driver’s license, and automobile Insurance.
