Job summary

The New York Times is seeking a senior Motion Graphics designer to elevate animated graphics for video journalism within the Digital News Design group. You will craft motion assets across shows, collaborating with reporters, editors, producers and host questions to deliver compelling visuals.

Based in New York, this in‑office role requires four days in the office weekly with potential remote flexibility per department guidance. A strong portfolio and expert command of After Effects are essential.

Qualifications

  • 5+ years of motion design experience, After Effects essential.
  • Proficiency in Figma, Photoshop, Illustrator and Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Strong portfolio of design work.
  • Solid understanding of layout, typography, and storytelling techniques.
  • Experience creating visual presentations that intelligently incorporate audio, video, still images and text.

Responsibilities

  • Create original designs and craft video toolkits for a range of shows and show formats.
  • Work collaboratively with show producers, and editors to create engaging and informative videos.
  • Convey visual story ideas and complex information in engaging video sequences and animation.

About the Role

The New York Times' Motion Graphics team focuses on elevating how animated graphics and motion design are used in our video journalism. Working in close collaboration with Video, Shows and Graphics, the team responds to the demands of stories and formats across the newsroom-from news explainers and visual investigations to enterprise series and shows.

As a member of Digital News Design's Motion Graphics team, you will focus on work for Shows, a department created to expand the reach of The Times's audio and video shows. You will collaborate with reporters, editors, producers, art directors and show hosts to craft motion assets and visuals for our expanding roster of shows across a range of formats and platforms.

You will be responsible for identifying creative needs and producing a range of design assets, including motion graphics, typography, animations, and mogert templates. In consultation with editors and other newsroom leaders, you'll exercise journalistic judgment and visual creativity to innovate and ensure accuracy, clarity, and validity of the content presented. Design team members are expected not only to make exceptional contributions to our journalism, but also to engage with others to foster an environment of learning and constructive dialogue about our work.

This is an in-office position based in New York and includes regular attendance in the office four days each week. There may be some flexibility to work remotely per your departmental guidance.

Basic Qualifications
  • 5+ years of motion design experience.Expertise with After Effects, designing for motion and animation is essential.
  • Expertise with Figma, Photoshop, Illustrator and Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Strong portfolio of design work.
  • Solid understanding of layout, typography, and storytelling techniques.
  • Experience creating visual presentations that intelligently incorporate audio, video, still images and text.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Enthusiasm for designing and making great animations and design for storytelling to cover current events for The New York Times.
  • Experience making quick decisions under deadlines and a high-pressure newsroom environment.
  • Experience working collaboratively with members of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Experience meeting deadlines and to adapt to change in a daily, unpredictable news and production environment
  • Open to working a flexible schedule ((#LI-Hybrid))

The annual base pay range for this role is between: $113,945.85 - $136,000 USD
