Job summary

The Washington Post invites college juniors, seniors and graduate students to join its flagship summer newsroom internship program in Washington, D.C. Interns report and write articles, edit copy, take photographs, shoot and edit video, design on multiple platforms and develop audience strategies.

You will work alongside award-winning journalists, learning from them as staff members during your internship. Deadline to apply is Oct. 9, 2026, noon ET.

Qualifications

  • You must be a college junior, senior or graduate student enrolled in a degree program by the application deadline, which is noon Eastern time on Friday, Oct. 9, 2026.
  • You enjoy identifying stories best told through data visualization, maps or interactive experiences.
  • You must be proficient in CSS(3), HTML(5), jQuery and JavaScript.
  • You must have experience in developing with databases, XML, JSON, PHP and/or Django.
  • You have a commitment to accuracy, clarity and journalistic rigor.

Responsibilities

  • Report and write articles, edit copy, take photographs, shoot and edit video, create graphics, produce audio, design on multiple platforms, develop audience strategy and do data analyses.
  • You will work alongside and learn from award-winning journalists, and interns are treated as staff members during the internship.
  • You will utilize the storytelling toolbox – writing, reporting, charting, coding, mapping and data visualization – to weave it all together to tell engaging stories.
  • You will create, or assist in creating, news applications such as data-driven maps, databases, social media apps, widgets and mobile tools.
