Job summary

SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital in St. Louis, MO is seeking a pre-licensure graduate to join the Nurse Residency Program as a Practical Nurse. Under the direction of an RN/LPN preceptor, you will provide care to patients within the scope of your role and standards.

This residency supports ongoing professional growth and learning as you gain confidence and clinical skills in a busy unit with night shifts, weekend rotation every third weekend, and holiday requirements.

Qualifications

  • Graduate of an accredited school of practical nursing.
  • For Illinois: an official passing score on NCLEX results.

Responsibilities

  • Performs delegated nursing care activities under supervision.
  • Contributes to patient assessments including biophysical, psychosocial, spiritual, cultural and age-appropriate needs.
  • Administers medications and observes for adverse reactions.
  • Educates patients and families about disease treatment, self-care post discharge and available resources.
  • Completes accurate and timely documentation.
  • Completes training and competency requirements.

Job Summary

Pre-licensure graduate of an accredited practical nursing program. May be a participant in the SSM Health New Graduate Nurse Residency Program. Under the direction of RN, provides care to patients within scope of role and professional standards. Responsible for the delivery of age appropriate care for assigned patients with a wide variety of medical conditions.

Job Responsibilities and Requirements

Under the direction of the RN or LPN Preceptor:

  • Performs delegated tasks based on demonstrated competence in performing practical nursing care activities for population served. Delegated specialized tasks may include anything for which training was received in the approved practical nursing program.
  • Contributes to patient assessments including biophysical, psychosocial, spiritual, cultural, and age appropriate needs of the patients, including the assessment of nutrition, pain management, and signs/symptoms of abuse or neglect in order to contribute to the patient‘s plan of care.
  • Administers medications and observes patients for adverse reactions to medications and treatments.
  • Educates patients/families about disease treatment plan including self-care post discharge, holistic needs, available resources and follow up care.
  • Completes accurate and timely documentation.
  • Completes competency requirements satisfactorily.
  • Completes training as required; seeks assistance and asks questions as needed to learn and understand role.
  • As part of SSM Health nursing department, I will demonstrate the professional nursing standards defined in the professional practice model. Uses the ANA Code of Ethics for Nurses to guide his/her response to the current and evolving health and care needs of our patients and our patient populations.
  • Works in a constant state of alertness and safe manner.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Education
  • Graduate of an accredited school of practical nursing

Experience

Physical Requirements
  • Constant use of speech to share information through oral communication.
  • Constant standing and walking.
  • Frequent lifting/carrying and pushing/pulling objects weighing 0-25 lbs.
  • Frequent sitting, reaching and keyboard use/data entry.
  • Frequent use of vision and depth perception for distances near (20 inches or less) and far (20 feet or more) and to identify and distinguish colors.
  • Frequent use of smell to detect/recognize odors.
  • Frequent use of hearing to receive oral communication, distinguish body sounds and/or hear alarms, malfunctioning machinery, etc.
  • Occasional lifting/carrying and pushing/pulling objects weighing 25-50 lbs.
  • Occasional lifting/moving of patients.
  • Occasional bending, stooping, kneeling, squatting, twisting, gripping and repetitive foot/leg and hand/arm movements.
  • Occasional driving.
  • Rare crawling and running.
