Job summary

Arup, a global design and engineering consultancy, invites graduates to join its Early Careers lighting team in San Francisco. You will develop concepts for lighting projects, run daylighting and photometric calculations, and model in 3-D and 2-D formats.

You’ll also craft visual materials in Photoshop and collaborate across disciplines on BIM projects. You will build a portfolio, gain vendor insights, and contribute to reports while learning from senior designers and partners in a supportive,

Qualifications

• Bachelor or Master’s degree in a related field.
• Strong interest in architectural lighting design and daylighting.
• Fundamentals of photometrics, and light source types.
• 3D modelling in Rhino, AutoCAD, Revit and/or SketchUp.

Responsibilities

• Develop concepts and strategies for lighting projects with senior team members.
• Perform lighting calculations (Electrical and Daylighting).
• Produce lighting modelling in 3-D and 2-D formats.
• Create visual materials in Photoshop and Adobe Suite.
• Prepare reports and write project documentation.
• Work on projects using Revit and BIM.
• Support meetings and coordinate with architects and other disciplines.
• Engage with vendors to learn about new lighting topics.

The opportunity

• Develop concepts and strategies for lighting projects, with senior team members
• Lighting calculations (Electrical and Daylighting)
• Produce lighting modelling including building computer and physical models (3-D and 2-D)
• Develop visual materials to represent lighting designs, including inside of Photoshop and Adobe Suite
• Report writing
• Working on projects using Revit
• Givinginitial structure to ideas through testing and using spreadsheets, reports, sketching and analyses for discussion
• Working with vendors to gain knowledge on new subjects and assist in facilitating meetings
• Attending meetings and learning from listening, participating with teams, architects and other disciplines

Is this role right for you?

• Bachelor orMaster's Degreein Architecture, Architectural Engineering, Interior Design, Lighting Design, Building Science, Theatre designor similar related field
• Core interest in the lighting design industry with an emphasis on architectural lighting design, daylighting, or architectural application of theatre lighting design
• Understanding of lighting fundamentals including photometric quantities, calculation techniques, and light source types
• Ability to model in 3D via Rhino, AutoCAD, Revit and/or SketchUp
• Experience with MS word, Excel, and Adobe Suite
• Experience with AGI-32, Dialux, or similar lighting software
• Capability to explain spatial design in a conversational and visual context
• Coursework in Architectural or Lighting Systems Design and/or Building Systems Design
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills essential for team-based working
• Portfolio or work sample included in application
• Internship experience in a consulting firm with emphasis on lighting design preferred
• Academic research with relevant focuspreferred
• Membership in IES and Student IALDpreferred
• Experience with Radiance preferred
• Experience with technical writingpreferred
• Exposure to programming such as, but not limited to, Python, C++, C# preferred
• The ability to prioritize effectively, balance assigned work and exceptional organization skills required for our constantly evolving environment

San Francisco Hiring Range – Hiring Range – The good faith base salary hiring range for this job if performed in San Francisco is $79,500 to $86,500 per year. This range is commensurate with experience, educational background, and skill level. Benefits are not included in the base salary. Please note hiring ranges for candidates performing work outside of San Francisco will differ.

Houston Hiring Range – Hiring Range - The good faith base salary hiring range for this job if performed in Houston is $76,500 to $83,500 per year. This range is commensurate with experience, educational background, and skill level. Benefits are not included in the base salary. Austin Hiring Range – Hiring Range - The good faith base salary hiring range for this job if performed in Austin is $73,500 to $80,500 per year.
