Job summary

Apex Engineering Group seeks a Graduate Engineer to join highway, urban roadway and municipal projects from planning through design and construction, collaborating with project teams to develop plans and construction documents. The role includes serving as resident project representative in the field during construction.

The position requires a BS in Civil Engineering, EI certification (or ability to obtain within a year), 1–3 years of relevant experience, excellent written and verbal

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering required.
  • EI certification or ability to obtain within one year.
  • 1–3 years of experience on roadway or municipal projects.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills required.
  • Must be detail oriented with strong interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • Proficient using Windows/Office products (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint).
  • Working knowledge of AutoCAD, Civil 3D and Microstation/GeoPak or other CADD-based civil design software is a plus.
  • A valid driver’s license is required.

Responsibilities

  • Perform assigned tasks as part of project teams on civil engineering projects while learning the project development process including planning, design, specifications, plans, reports and construction observation.
  • Communicate frequently with supervisors and project managers on updates and progress during all phases of projects.
  • Attend company, project and client meetings regularly.
  • Assist in preparing proposals and interviews for securing work, with increased responsibilities over time.
  • Take initiative to think independently and make rational judgments.
  • Align with project engineers and owners on-site representation with progression to project management.
  • Collaborate with Apex team on development of project plans and specifications.
  • Follow company CADD procedures and employee handbook with safety policies.
  • Perform tasks conscientiously, legally and ethically with attention to detail.
  • Work independently and in a team; participate in professional organizations and community leadership.
  • Travel/out-of-town stays required; overtime may occur during construction season.

Any Apex Office (Fargo, Bismarck, Dickinson, Minot, ND or Detroit Lakes, St. Cloud, or Minnetonka, MN)

Position Description

Primary responsibilities include working as a key project team member on highway, urban roadway or municipal projects from the planning phase through design and construction. A Graduate Engineer shall be capable of independently and collaboratively contributing to the design and development of project plans, specifications while working with project team members. Graduate Engineers typically report to a Project Manager or Senior Engineer. Additional responsibilities will include taking on the role of resident project representative (RPR) in the field during construction projects.

Qualification Requirements
  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering required.
  • Engineering Intern (EI) certified, or ability to obtain certification within one year.
  • 1-3 Years of experience with design and/or construction observation responsibilities on roadway or general municipal projects.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills required.
  • Must be detail oriented, self-motivated with strong interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • Flexible working style and willingness to occasionally modify personal schedules as required to meet deadlines and/or client needs.
  • Proficient using Microsoft Windows/Office products (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint).
  • Working knowledge of AutoCAD, Civil 3D and Microstation/GeoPak or other CADD-based civil design software is a plus.
  • A valid driver’s license is required or the ability to obtain one.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to operate a computer under normal ergonomic office conditions.
  • Required to work in an outdoor environment during construction season.
  • May require prolonged periods of standing and walking to perform some of the typical tasks and duties associated with construction observation or surveying.
  • Required to lift and move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and move up to 50 pounds.
  • Must be able to work required schedule on construction site or in the office as directed.

Essential Tasks and Duties
  • Perform assigned tasks as part of project teams on civil engineering projects while learning the project development process including planning, design, specifications, plans, reports and construction observation.
  • Communicate frequently and effectively with supervisors and project managers on a consistent basis by providing updates and progress during all phases of projects.
  • Attend company meetings, project meetings and client meetings on a regular basis.
  • This position will require a limited role initially in preparing proposals and participating in interviews for securing work for the firm. Responsibilities for business development will increase with experience and mentoring by senior staff.
  • This position will require the initiative to think independently and make rational judgment calls.
  • Expect to take on and understand the role of the project engineer and the owners on-site representative on construction projects with progression to project management.
  • Work with Apex team members on the development of project plans and specifications.
  • Understand and follow company CADD procedures.
  • Understand and follow company employee handbook and mandated safety policies.
  • Perform responsibilities in a conscientious, legal and ethical manner with a strong attention to detail.
  • Must be able to work independently and in a team environment.
  • Participate in professional organizations and community leadership programs.
  • Travel and out-of-town stays will be required; may work overtime especially during the construction season.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Hourly Base Pay Range

$31-$40 (Actual base pay is dependent on several factors, including experience, education, licensure, job location, and internal equity.)
