Graduate Assistant, Student Involvement and Leadership

Location: Hickory, North Carolina

Position Description

The Graduate Assistant (GA) for the Office of Student Involvement and Leadership plays a key role in supporting community development and programming efforts. This position provides an opportunity to gain valuable transferable skills in event planning, marketing, community engagement, communication, organizational leadership, and time management.

This role requires flexibility, as work hours will vary based on event scheduling throughout the week and on weekends. The ideal candidate is passionate about building community among students and committed to growing their leadership skills through event coordination and campus collaborations.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Coach and support students through the organization development process, including leading new organization information sessions.
  • Review student organization event and fundraiser request forms and report submissions for inclusion in the office’s master events calendar.
  • Collaborate with campus partners to develop inclusive events and programming opportunities.
  • Provide general guidance to student leaders to foster independence and leadership.
  • Motivate and empower student organizations to create environments that promote learning, development, personal growth, civic responsibility, academic excellence, and integrity.
  • Engage with the student community through tabling, event promotion, polling, and assessment.
  • Promote civic engagement and community service opportunities to students.
  • Co-advise the Campus Activities Board (CAB), a student-led programming board, in partnership with the director of Student Involvement and Leadership.
  • Assist the coordinator of Student Engagement in enhancing the fraternity and sorority experience through leadership education, cross-campus engagement, and recruitment/intake support.
  • Support intramural sports efforts, including the organization of games and tournaments.
  • Contribute to marketing initiatives by creating flyers, social media content, and updates to the student organization online platform.
  • Assist with daily office operations.
  • Support collaborative events and initiatives as they arise throughout the academic year.
  • Contribute to the review and development of policies and procedures within Student Involvement.
  • Assist with broader departmental events such as Welcome Weekend, Family Weekend, Homecoming, the Leadership Conference, Student Life Awards, CAB events, fraternity and sorority life (FSL) awards, and intramural events.
  • Support the office’s assessment efforts through data collection and analysis.
  • Maintain confidentiality of student records and comply with FERPA regulations regarding student information.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Meet regularly with the director of Student Involvement and Leadership.
  • Develop a professional development plan that connects the GA experience with future career goals.
  • Support the Office of Strategic Initiatives in community engagement efforts.
  • Attend Student Life staff meetings.
  • Assist in implementing institutional and departmental priorities.
  • Build strong partnerships to support collaborations with on- and off-campus stakeholders.
  • Assume additional responsibilities as assigned by the director.
