Position Summary:

The term Graduate Assistant is the umbrella term that encompasses all types of GA appointments. Graduate Assistants are employed by the University to teach, conduct research, or assist with administrative duties in departments and non-academic units. Every attempt is made to assign Graduate Assistants to positions that are directly related to the student’s field of study or that provide the opportunity to develop transferable, professional skills. Graduate Assistantships are assigned in the department or unit and confirmed by the Graduate School.

The Position:The Dean of Students Office is a fast-paced, dynamic, student-centered environment that assists and serves the entire University community. The Graduate Assistant (GA) for Student Belonging, Outreach, and Assessment focuses on providing support, education, and outreach to the campus community, working with students individually and in groups, and collaborating on departmental projects including assessment initiatives. This position works in collaboration with the Dean of Students, Associate Dean of Students, and Assistant Deans of Students and while the GA is assigned specific duties, cross-functional involvement in all aspects of the Dean of Students Office is encouraged.

Key Responsibilities:

Student Support

  • Oversee Starfish submissions from faculty and staff concerning students personal concerns and disruptive behavior;
  • Assist in meeting and building rapport individually with students, and providing help and support via drop-ins and student appointments;
  • Coach students on appropriate communication with faculty, staff, and other students;
  • Monitor the Police Dashboard and send outreach to students who experienced minor medical concerns;
  • Serve as a resource to students, faculty, staff, and others who may need assistance managing a wide range of questions and concerns; and
  • Provide guidance and interpretation of University policies to the University community.

Belonging Initiatives & Assessment
  • Plan, implement and evaluate DOS outreach programs such as Donuts with the Deans;
  • Serve as the Student Representative on the Bias Education and Support Team;
  • Present to classes, student groups and organizations about the support and resources the Dean of Students Office provides;
  • Represent the Dean of Students Office at campus events such as the SOAR Expo, Rawkin’ Welcome Week, Homecoming, and other campus programs and events as necessary;
  • Assist Assistant Dean in assessment efforts for department-wide assessment efforts; through Office assessment databases, such as Qualtrics and Spartan Experience; and
  • Assist in assessment efforts of office programming.

Marketing and Communications
  • Establish a social media plan, manage, and update departmental social media outlets; and
  • Oversee the social media efforts of the Dean of Students Office.

General Administrative Responsibilities
  • Respond to inquiries about the department and its processes to persons either in person, by phone, or by email;
  • Attend weekly staff meetings; and
  • Other duties and special projects as assigned.

Work Hours, Environment: The philosophy of the Dean of Students Office is that graduate students deserve challenge, support, supervision, resources, professional development opportunities, and mentoring. Graduate students should enjoy their work in the fast-paced work environment, feel an active part of the Office, and gain a well-rounded professional experience in the field of student affairs.

The Graduate Assistant must be enrolled in at least nine (9) credit hours per semester, fully admitted into a degree program (not provisional) and is responsible for working 20 hours per week in the Dean of Students Office. Although the hours are typically Monday through Friday during regular business hours of 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., some earlier mornings, later evenings, and weekends may be required on a minimal basis during certain times of the year such as orientation, staff retreat, homecoming, or during other special events and circumstances. Due to the demands of the office, work schedules must be approved by the GA’s supervisor each semester. The Graduate Office Assistant will have an assigned appointment for the period of August through May of the following year with a priority to return for the following academic year based on adequate performance reviews.

Additional Terms of Employment: If the departmental budget permits, the Graduate Office Assistant may be offered the opportunity to work over the summer.Minimum Qualifications:

To be eligible for appointments as a graduate assistant, you must:

  • Maintain academic good standing at all times (3.0).
  • Be enrolled full-time, which is generally a minimum of 9 credits.
  • Make satisfactory progress toward your degree as defined by your academic program and the Graduate School.
  • Meet the requirements to be eligible for employment in the U.S.
