Job summary

Penn State University’s Institute for Computational and Data Sciences seeks a Research Computing Engineer to design, operate, and optimize GPU and AI computing infrastructure and HPC systems used by researchers across the university. This on-site role partners with researchers to deliver scalable, reliable services.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent with relevant experience required.
  • Strong Linux, Bash and Python scripting skills.
  • Experience debugging complex systems and collaborating in teams.
  • Experience with AI tools to improve workflows is a plus.
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with teammates, users, and vendors to diagnose issues across compute, storage, networking, and software.
  • Monitor, maintain, automate, and improve AI and HPC systems and supporting infra.
  • Design, deploy, operate, troubleshoot, and optimize systems using DevOps practices.
  • Support GPU-accelerated computing environments for AI/ML workloads.
  • Partner with researchers to understand workloads and develop engineering solutions.
  • Support security, logging, documentation, and compliance processes.
  • Contribute to planning, requirements gathering, and operational readiness for new services.
  • Provide updates to system documentation and assist users with guidance.
  • Evaluate tools and workflows that support AI model development and data movement at scale.
