Qualifications

What You’ll Do

This position is responsible for the support, administration, configuration, data administration, enhancement, and testing of GPS (Global Positioning System) and GIS (Geographic Information System) and related applications used by Peoples Gas System.

Title: GPS Technician I Company: Peoples Gas System State and City: Florida - Tampa Shift: 8 Hr. X 5 Days

What You’ll Do

This position is responsible for the support, administration, configuration, data administration, enhancement, and testing of GPS (Global Positioning System) and GIS (Geographic Information System) and related applications used by Peoples Gas System.

Work includes quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) of GPS and mapping data to ensure that as-built information from the field, pipeline network continuity and integrity, equipment identifiers, equipment attributes, and spatial information is correct and up to date. Work may also include maintenance and updates to land base information on the GIS.

The position works closely with end-users and IT technical staff to analyze, design, build, and produce GPS data, maps, queries, and reports from the GPS software in support of efficient operations and effective decision making.

Work is primarily performed in the field and at various operating locations across the state including but not limited to active construction sites, company and contractor office and field facilities.

Day-to-Day Responsibilities

  • Provide User Support: Assist individual users including contractors with the use of GPS Barcoding equipment and how to understand the information stored by GIS. This includes assisting users with navigating the GPS software, plus how to collect data by use of GPS field equipment to produce maps, displays, reports, and queries. Participate in providing consultation, formal and informal training, documentation, and job aids in support of end-users and SME understanding and utilization of the GPS Barcoding system. Provide training and instructions that will enable them to effectively plan the use and properly capture data that will accurately depict mapping of the gas system and field assets.
  • Maintain GPS & Barcoding Equipment: Troubleshoot equipment operations and functionality through direct contact or other means of communications such as phone and e-mail. Maintains inventory for assigned areas and provide equipment support through repair or replacement of inoperative field devices. Escalate issues to appropriate management to resolve in a timely manner.
  • Participate In Process & System Improvements: Participate in efforts to evaluate, re-engineer, design, specify, recommend, justify, implement, and document business processes and workflows and applications and hardware related to GPS and mapping activities in order to ensure effective fulfillment of business requirements. Includes testing of software enhancements and may include feasibility studies and research. May also include troubleshooting and resolving problems.
  • Fulfill Special Requests: Participate in efforts to design, specify, recommend, test, and produce special and ad-hoc maps, displays, reports, and queries to meet end users’ business requirements on request. Includes basic geospatial analysis.
  • Maintains and updates the Company’s GIS system to meet company, state, and federal guidelines and compliance regulations by entering pipeline information and locations into GIS from as-built work order system and proposed sketches.
  • Provide assistance to GDT Technicians and Project Managers in the marking and submittal of road improvement plans for municipalities and the FDOT.
  • Communicates with engineering and architectural firms, as well as local and state agencies to provide assistance with infrastructure, environmental and regulatory impacts to the gas distribution and transmission pipeline network system.

What We’re Looking For

Must Haves:

  • Minimum of a High School Diploma or equivalent certificate is required.
  • Valid Florida State Driver License and safe driving record.
  • Minimum of four (4) years of work experience related to the Duties and Responsibilities of this position is required.
  • Appropriate college degrees may be considered in lieu of some work experience. Appropriate degrees include disciplines such as Geography, GIS, and Drafting.
  • Must have knowledge and previous experience of working with GPS field collection software and hardware.

Nice-to-Haves

  • Experience with PGS’ Global Positioning System (GPS) field collection process and Geographical Information Systems (GIS), editing all specifications in GIS, such as the correct gas mains connectivity, and resolving any identified errors in GIS.
  • Must be knowledgeable in CAD for drafting purposes as well as computerized database systems. Must have practical knowledge of basic drafting principles and GIS systems.
  • Knowledgeable in the use of Customer Information Systems (CIS) and other related databases as a tool in system design and modeling.
  • Proficient in at least one related software application such as: Utility Center, Intergraph G/Technology, ESRI ArcInfo, AutoCAD, MicroStation, or other similar systems.

Working Conditions

  • Work hours consist of a minimum of 8-hours per day Monday through Friday.
  • Some overtime is required to meet internal/external customer deadlines and storm response.
  • Working conditions are both indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • The level of stress is moderate to heavy depending upon the level of interaction with internal/external customers and governmental agencies.
  • Work is primarily performed in the field and at various operating locations across the state including but not limited to active construction sites, company and contractor office and field facilities.
  • Driving company assigned vehicle. Occasional overtime may be required.

Physical Demands/Requirements

  • Physical demand requirements include working in a mixture of office and field conditions, which includes walking in rough terrain, lifting objects up to 50 lbs., and wearing appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) in an 8-hour day. Driving both day and nighttime hours.
  • Carry objects up to 50lbs. Walking, climbing in and around active construction sites.
  • Must wear personal protective equipment (safety apparel) for extended periods of time.

A pre-employment drug screening, as well as a background check (including education, employment, criminal and motor vehicle) will also be conducted as part of the pre-employment screening. A physical may be conducted if required for the role.
